Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Have a Fashionable Outing With North and Saint After the VMAs

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are currently living the good life in NYC, and on Monday, the couple took a stroll around the Upper East Side with their two children, North and Saint West. The family made quite the fashionable appearance; Kim showed off her tiny waist in a belted long-sleeved shirt while Kanye donned a Tupac Shakur tee and North and Saint sported some fun prints. Two days later, Kim took to Instagram to share a photo from their adorable day and captioned it, "I ❤️ my family."

Kim and Kanye's outing comes less than a week after the duo's big night at the MTV VMAs. Not only did they look like prom king and queen on the red carpet, but the rapper, who resembled his old, lovable self, used his free reign to give a poignant speech and debut his new video for "Fade."

Cannabis Seeds A New Image: New Study Shows Weed Makes Workers Less Prone To Absenteeism

Cannabis seeds a new image and a new way of thinking about weed. A new study that takes a look at sick day statistics reveals surprising data. Employees are using fewer sick days since their states have legalized medical marijuana. There is an 8 percent overall decrease in employees using sick days in 24 states, and those are the states where weed has been legalized.

The weed legalization argument could be significantly strengthened by the study. It seems that the more relaxed the state regulation of cannabis, the less absenteeism was reported. States with fewer restrictions in their marijuana laws show a more dramatic improvement, with a 13 percent reduction in employees using sick days.

The New Study by Darin F Ullman titled “The Effect of Medical Marijuana on Sickness Absence” shows exactly the opposite of what the experts predicted. It calls into question old ideas about cannabis, seeds a new image advocacy, and steals the thunder of opponents.

“Utilizing the Current Population Survey, the study identifies that absences due to sickness decline following the legalization of medical marijuana. The effect is stronger in states with ‘lax’ medical marijuana regulations, for full-time workers, and for middle-aged males, which is the group most likely to hold medical marijuana cards.”

Cannabis seeds a new image, with new studies like this one. Already weed is gaining credibility as a medicinal treatment. It’s taking on Epilepsy as a powerful treatment according to Inquisitr.

Legalizing weed would be bad for the workplace environment, predicted the Institute for a Drug-Free Workplace. Their view as presented was very negative, but it represents what many thought would happen.

“Fact #1: Legalizing marijuana is bad for the workplace.
The impact of employee marijuana use is seen in the workplace in lower productivity, increased workplace accidents and injuries, increased absenteeism, and lower morale. This can and does seriously impact the bottom line.”

The new cannabis study seems to fly in the fact of predictions, proving or at least inferring that people are helped enough by medical marijuana use to be able to come to work more often, not that people are laying out because they are too high to work. By definition, the study doesn’t actually prove that medical cannabis is preventing absenteeism. Other factors could have been involved in the lower numbers, but the implications are there.

Other new studies on the effects of cannabis also seed a new image for weed. According to Inquistr, cannabis use can ease migraine headaches, a frequent cause of employee absences. While more studies are needed to explain how weed works on various conditions and what if any lasting effects it might cause, according to Inquisitr, as of now scientists do not understand how Cannabis works in the human body to ease suffering.

Legalizing weed was predicted to overwhelmingly increase absenteeism as well as a host of other worker-related problems. The Institute for a Drug-Free Workplace article continues to predict dire consequences involving the legalization of weed.

“Drug-abusing employees are absent from work ten times more frequently than their non-using peers, and the turnover rate is 30 percent higher than for those employees who do not engage in illicit drug abuse. Workers who reported drug use are significantly more likely to have worked for three or more employers in the past year, and to have higher rates of unexcused absences and voluntary turnover in the past year.”

Legalizing weed, contrary to these previous assumptions could actually boost productivity in the U.S. The question is, when will the official opinion toward weed change? Could employees finally see an end to those drug tests nationwide or at least a trend away from targeting cannabis use specifically? Could the seeds of change be in the wind?

Alzheimer’s Disease Breakthrough: New Drug Visibly Clears Amyloid Plaque From Brains Of Trial Patients [Video]

Alzheimer’s Disease Breakthrough

An exciting Alzheimer’s disease breakthrough may have just been discovered, and if it works the way scientists think it might, it could offer hope to millions of people struggling with the degenerative disease. The new Alzheimer’s breakthrough, which was announced Wednesday, comes in the form of an antibody present in the blood of elderly patients who haven’t developed Alzheimer’s. When the antibody (called aducanumab) is administered in drug form, it can actually visibly clear visible Alzheimer’s disease signs from the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.

In the clinical trial, the results were so promising that The Independent reported one scientist as saying that they were desperately “trying not to get too excited” about the Alzheimer’s disease breakthrough.

In specific, the Alzheimer’s drug, which is still in the early clinical trial stages, visibly eliminated nearly 100 percent of the amyloid plaques in the brains of the Alzheimer’s patients participating in the trial who received the highest doses of the experimental antibody treatment. Amyloid plaques are a visible symptom of Alzheimer’s disease, they occur in the brains of all Alzheimer’s patients, and they are visible on brain scans.

According to the scientists who conducted the study on the Alzheimer’s disease breakthrough, in addition to the visible improvement of the brains of the clinical trial patients that received the experimental drug, those patients also demonstrated a decreased rate of cognitive decline. Cognitive decline is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease, and it is traditionally progressive and accelerates as the disease progresses.

The findings of the Alzheimer’s antibody study were published in the journal Nature.

In addition to being an incredibly promising Alzheimer’s disease treatment, the new study also offers some previously unknown insight into the devastating disease. As a result of the clinical trial, researchers are coming to the realization that the amyloid plaques could actually be causing the Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline rather than simply being a waste product or byproduct of the Alzheimer’s brain.

According to one expert, if the Alzheimer’s disease breakthrough is repeatable on a large scale, it could totally change the game when it comes to treating and preventing Alzheimer’s.

Fortunately for Alzheimer’s sufferers, their loved ones and caretakers and anyone the world over that might be someday impacted by the disease, large scale clinical trials of the new drug are being conducted in multiple locations across the globe.

Researchers indicate that the results of the Alzheimer’s disease breakthrough are profound and consistent across the board, even though the initial clinical trial was small in scope. The trial reportedly involved four groups. Three of the groups got the actual drug in three different doses and the fourth received a placebo. Clinical trial participants were unaware of which group they were in.

After receiving the drug (or not) over the course of a year, scientists discovered amazing in the trial patients’ brain scans.

“One year later, the images of the placebo group are basically unchanged. In the three doses groups, a very clear reduction in amyloid plaques is shown – the higher the dose, the larger the degree of reduction.”

Researchers and scientists are calling the effects of the new breakthrough Alzheimer’s drug “unprecedented.” However, their optimism is cautious and they are withholding their ultimate judgement on the success of the of the new Alzheimer’s drug until they can be confirmed and repeated in larger trials.

If the Alzheimer’s disease breakthrough can be repeated and is consistent in its effectiveness, it could give doctors an excellent new tool for treating and perhaps even preventing Alzheimer’s disease.

Doctors, researchers and scientists acknowledge that the trial Alzheimer’s treatment could potentially offer a treatment for the disease unlike anything available today. No drug or other treatment currently available on the market actually does anything to counteract the progression of Alzheimer’s, which means that aducanumab could potentially revolutionize the way Alzheimer’s is handled by medical professionals. I could even be bringing humanity one step closer to a cure for the disease, which is always fatal.

“No existing treatments for Alzheimer’s directly interfere with the disease process – and so a drug that actually slows the progress of the disease by clearing amyloid would be a significant step.”

Head of research at the Alzheimer’s Society, Dr. James Pickett, commented on the newly published research. He called the results of the study “the most detailed and promising we’ve seen.”

The new Alzheimer’s disease breakthrough treatment isn’t without its risk, although reportedly the most commonly reported side-effect of the experimental treatment was headache. It’s also worth noting that the long-term risks/benefits of the drug are not known and extensive further study on the practical impacts of the breakthrough Alzheimer’s disease treatment on the cognitive impacts of the disease are needed.

While it’s not known when this newly discovered drug could be widely available to the general population, experts expect that the next stage of widespread clinical trials on the breakthrough Alzheimer’s disease drug to be completed in 2020.

Is Justin The Reason Selena Gomez Canceled Her Dubai Gig?

UAE-based fans of former Disney star Selena Gomez were super excited when she announced that she would be making a stop in Dubai as part of her Revival world tour. Set to perform alongside Elton John, All Saints, and Major Lazer as part of 117 Live's fall lineup, Selena's show was scheduled for November 18th.

Unfortunately, Bieber's ex released a statement earlier this week canceling the rest of the stops of her tour, which were in Europe, South America, and Dubai.

"I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus[the singer was diagnosed with this autoimmune disease in 2015], which can present their own challenges," she said. "I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off ... I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best."

Gomez's statement comes just two weeks after she engaged in a pretty public feud with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, which resulted in Justin deleting his Instagram account.

While we can't blame Bieber for Selena's health issues, the timing is a bit coincidental. Either way, we wish Selena a speedy recovery!

Joanne the Scammer Just Scammed Us All With That Drake and Rihanna Website

Image Source: Getty / Michael Loccisano

After setting the Hollywood rumor mill on fire with their lovey-dovey behavior at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, we thought maybe couple Drake and Rihanna were doing it again with a mysterious website. After DrakeAndRihanna.com, a simple black webpage featuring the rapper's latest album symbol and a timer counting down until Sept. 9, caught the eye of fans this week, the internet was buzzing with speculation about what it all meant.

Turns out the website was all a hoax created by none other than Joanne the Scammer. On Tuesday, Joanne changed the site to a video of herself going on a rant about how mad she is at Drake for not acknowledging her at the VMAs on Sunday. "I am very pissed off. Drake, you acted like you were not at the VMAs . . . Did you know I was there? . . . I've waited so long to take a f*cking selfie with you, but you weren't there to take it. But you come out with Rihanna?" She ends the clip by saying, "This website is a hoax and now I can move on with my godd*mn life."

Given the fact that Drake preceded his 2015 mixtape with Future with a similarly designed, never-officially-confirmed countdown website, we thought this Drake and Rihanna one could have been the real deal. Here are 10 of our editors' best ideas about what we thought DrakeAndRihanna.com was:

What DrakeAndRihanna.com Could Have Been:

  1. A countdown to the livestream of their wedding
  2. The time left until their "Too Good" video drops
  3. Counting down to the release date of Drake's upcoming album of Rihanna-inspired love songs
  4. The time left on Drake's celebratory billboard rental, so he's reminding Rihanna to enjoy it while it lasts
  5. A countdown until Rihanna and Drake drop a dual album
  6. Drake proposed and is giving Rihanna until the timer ends to answer before he's "gone for good"
  7. They're expecting a baby and will announce the pregnancy after the time is up
  8. Rihanna lent Drake her aux cable and needs him to return it by Sept. 9
  9. Drake and Rihanna are both really excited about getting new iPhones and are counting down to the announcement date
  10. They know something we don't, and this is actually a doomsday timer until the end of the world

Well, Joanne, you got us good.

This Literal "Lawn Chair" Grows Right Out of The Ground

Lawn furniture usually conjures up images of canvas cushions and wicker chairs, but not if the startup TERRA! gets its way! The company is creating literal "lawn chairs" that grow right out of the ground. All you need is their cardboard form, dirt, seeds, water, and a little patience. The result is an eco-friendly spot to sit or lie down and enjoy the outdoors while blending right in with the scenery.

The concept is the brainchild of Studio Nucleo designers Andrea Sanna and Piergiorgio Robino. The TERRA! chair appeared for the first time at the Milan Salone Satellite in 2000, and was selected for the XIX Compasso d'Oro as a 'Product for the Community' Award in 2001. The following year it was shown at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. In 2004 it showed at the Triennale in Milan, and then in 2012 at Biennal of Belo Horizonte, Brasil.

Now they're making this striking piece of tushy terra firma available to the general public through a KickStarter project (ending soon). The chair (and sofa) are made by putting together a cardboard frame, filling it with dirt, and sprinkling it generously with seedlings and water. We hope to see these in Safa park some time soon! Continue on to see the whole process of putting it together.

Of Course The World's Biggest Hotel is Opening in The Middle East

The Middle East is home to many over-the-top creations: an unrivaled indoor ski slope, the world's tallest building, the worlds largest mall, the world's largest LED light projection, which is on the Burj Khalifa, to name a few. But one thing the Middle East does not have is the world's largest hotel-- at least not yet.

Currently, Malaysia is home to the world's largest hotel. With 7,351 rooms, The First World Hotel in Genting Highlands, Malaysia, has hosted 35.5 million guests since opening in 2005. The second largest hotel in the world is The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas, Nevada. The complex has 7,117 rooms and was the largest in the world until The First World Hotel's 2015 expansion.

A new hotel set to open in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, has both of the world's largest hotels beat, though, and when it opens in 2017, it's expected to have 10,000 rooms and 70 restaurants!

The $3.5 billion project, which is still under construction, is owned by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Finance, and full floors of the 1.4 million square meter will be for royal guests only. There will be multiple helipads on the roof, and a full-sized convention center inside the hotel.

Watch the video below to see renderings of The Abraj Kudai, which will join (but far outshine) other mega-size Mecca hotels such as the Anjum Hotel and the Swissotel.

WhatsApp is Sharing Your Data With Facebook, Here's How to Stop it

In what's a major policy change for WhatsApp, the Middle East's favorite messaging app will start sharing user's data with their parent company, Facebook. When Facebook bought WhatsApp for the mind-blowing sum of $19 billion US dollars in 2014, Co-Founder Jan Koum promised to keep the platform independent, free of advertising, and private. He even penned a strongly worded blog post describing how "Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA, and we built WhatsApp around the goal of knowing as little about you as possible."

However, all that changed last week with an update to the app's terms of service. Facebook can now use your WhatsApp account data to enhance what the company knows about you overall. With ad profiling products that span the web, this information could potentially follow you everywhere Facebook is available online. But, for a limited time, you have the chance to take back some of your privacy by following our guide below.

What's Happening?

Facebook updated the WhatsApp terms of service to include the ability to share data with Facebook.

What's being shared?

According to Facebook, phone numbers will be shared with Facebook to offer 'better friend suggestions [and] more relevant ads'. They are also exploring following in the footsteps of Facebook Messenger and allowing businesses to use the platform to reach customers.

WhatsApp's own post on the update states, "Whether it's hearing from your bank about a potentially fraudulent transaction, or getting notified by an airline about a delayed flight, many of us get this information elsewhere, including in text messages and phone calls. We want to test these features in the next several months, but need to update our terms and privacy policy to do so."

To be clear, your encrypted messages are still entirely private and not subject to prying by Facebook or WhatsApp.

Why does this matter?

While Facebook is the semi-public profile you share with friends, WhatsApp usually contains more private details. Now some those details will be shared with Facebook. While the sharing is starting with phone numbers, your phone book holds some of your most intimate connections. Facebook will now be able to see what businesses you frequent and non-Facebook friends you make. That information will be connected into Facebook's growing platform of ad targeting products that aren't just limited to Facebook, but also span advertisements across the web.

What can I do about it?

You can opt out of the new deal.

How do I opt out of WhatsApp's data sharing?

If you haven't accepted the new terms of service yet, you're in luck. You can opt out of the new terms by not selecting "accept" and instead navigating to the smaller "read more" option, and untick the box that says "Share my WhatsApp account information with Facebook".

If you're like 99% of people on the Internet, you've already clicked accept. But fear not, you still have 30 days to change your mind!

Simply go to your user settings and navigate to the account tab. Scroll down and you'll find a "share my account info" button that you can switch to revoke your permission. It's as simple as that!

Did Kim Kardashian's Diamond Ring Look Bigger at the VMAs? That's Because It Was

Kim Kardashian had plenty to smile about when she attended the MTV Video Music Awards in New York City on Sunday night. In addition to the small but monumental task of introducing Britney Spears's triumphant return to the VMAs stage, the reality star also beamed from the audience when her husband, Kanye West, spoke candidly to the crowd about art, his Taylor Swift feud, and making history. But while Kanye's infectious smile was probably enough to make her night, there was something very sparkly on her finger that we couldn't help but notice. While hitting the red carpet in a sexy black dress, Kim revealed a massive new diamond ring that was noticeable larger than the 15-carat Lorraine Schwartz rock Kanye proposed with back in 2013. According to People, the ring, which appears to be an emerald cut with more sharply defined corners, was a recent gift from Kanye. Kim may have also worn it in their recent photo spread for the August issue of Harper's Bazaar. If this is just an average, everyday present, what will he do for Christmas this year?!

Taylor Swift Missed the VMAs Because of - Wait For It - Jury Duty

Taylor Swift was noticeably absent from the MTV Video Music Awards in New York City on Sunday night, and now the world knows why. The "Wildest Dreams" singer was a few states away in Tennessee, serving jury duty in Nashville. But despite her being, you know, a massive superstar, she proved once again that she can be as normal as they come when she spent the morning talking to the group of other potential jurors. A few people who were "lucky" enough to be summoned at the same time as Taylor took to social media to share their thoughts about their time spent with her. In addition to being more than happy to take selfies with everyone, she also listened intently when anyone had stories about how they or their children are big fans. While she was probably sad she didn't get to at least make an appearance at the VMAs, she must be relieved to have missed that dig from Kanye West during his speech.

Kim Kardashian Gives Off Mermaid Vibes at the 2016 MTV VMAs

Though Kim Kardashian is known for wearing fairly dramatic makeup, she attended the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards with a more natural, refreshing style.

Mario Dedivanovic made sure that her sun-kissed complexion was positively luminous, adding accents of highlighter on her Cupid's bow, cheekbones, and the bridge of her nose. The artist used a blend of Laura Mercier Face Illuminator Powder in Addiction and Devotion ($44 each) to create her gorgeous glow.

Stylist Michael Silva brushed back Kim's long hair, creating a textured, wet look that is the finishing touch on a gorgeous beauty style for any late Summer party. After all, it evokes the appearance of a mermaid who just swam up to shore. Read on for more shots!

We're a Slave For Britney Spears's Ferocious Return to the VMAs

Britney Spears attended the MTV Video Music Awards at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday night, proving that she's basically owned the show since her first appearance in 1999. The "Make Me. . ." singer hit the red carpet before her highly anticipated performance with G-Eazy, which marked the first time she rocked the VMAs stage in almost 10 years. Britney stunned in a black dress before changing into a yellow number with matching boots to belt out her hit song.

Her big night out is just the latest dose of Britney the world has been blessed with recently. In addition to releasing her new album, Glory, last week, she also made a hilarious appearance on Carpool Karaoke with James Corden and revealed that she would love to collaborate with ex Justin Timberlake (not kidding).

Celebrity Couples Use the MTV VMAs as Their Ultimate Sunday Date Night

There's no question that the MTV Video Music Awards is all about the music, but we almost couldn't peel our eyes away from all of the adorable moments that happened between celebrity couples. Never Say ‘Lose Weight’ When Discussing Health With Teens

Never say 'lose weight' to teens

When discussing health topics with your teens, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that you never say they need to lose weight. A recent report from the AAP indicates that the words “lose weight” causes more eating disorders and unhealthy eating patterns than discussing overall family health.

“The focus should be on a healthy lifestyle rather than on weight.”

The report lists some basic recommendations for discussing health with teens, such as not joking with teens about their weight, even with affection, and less encouragement from doctors about diets or suggestions to lose weight.

Pediatrician Dr. Christine Wood, from California, warns parents against extreme dieting plans or discussions about how they can lose weight.

“If the kid sees a lot of dieting behaviors around their parents, it can unfortunately lead to [thinking] this is sort of the norm and that we put a lot of value on body image. For young teens this can become an issue, and many of the kids that we see with eating disorders, it starts with sort of a body image issue.”

College student Brenndon Goodman recalls his teens when he weighed over 300 pounds. According to CBC News, he said that repeatedly discussing his weight drove a wedge between him and his family. The diets his doctor recommended only lasted a few days and did little to help him lose weight.

Wood says that an unhealthy lifestyle is the problem, not the weight.

“Pushing an agenda on a teen about food and how much weight they should lose can spiral into the wrong behaviors from the child.”

The AAP reminds parents to be mindful of their teen’s self esteem.

“Understanding that poor body image can lead to an ED [eating disorder], parents should avoid comments about body weight and discourage dieting efforts that may inadvertently result in EDs and body dissatisfaction.”

American Academy of Dietetics spokesperson Kristi King told CBS News that she agrees with the AAP report on not pushing teens to lose weight.

“I frequently find in practice that when families and/or a pediatrician is very weight-focused, the child or teen tends to become very fixated on reaching a certain weight point. Most of the time, it is a weight point that they think sounds ‘good’ and isn’t necessarily what may actually be healthy for their height, age, activity level, etc. This can lead to very unhealthy lifestyle habits in order for them to reach that weight point.”

Since healthy weight is important, King suggests other methods for discussing weight loss with teens, such as emphasizing the food groups’ importance in healthy diets and asking teens how they feel about themselves without giving them a negative opinion about their bodies. She says parents should never use words like “goal weight” and “fat.”

“Focusing on weight – even little comments such as ‘Ooh, I see a little tummy pouch there’ – can be damaging.”

King gave a few suggestions for handling the topics of healthy eating and ways to lose weight with teens.

  • Include teens in cooking and grocery shopping. If you are learning new recipes or lack certain culinary talents, bring in your child and learn together. You can make lifelong memories and teach them skills they will need when they are on their own.
  • Work family exercise time into your weekly routine. Take hikes or bike rides, or go for walks or jogs as a family. It sets a good example for your teens, and it helps your entire family be healthier and lose weight.
  • Plan for one meal with your entire family every day. Whether it is breakfast or dinner, it serves the same, health promoting purpose. Also, leave fresh, ready-to-eat veggies and fruits easily accessible to promote healthy meal choices.
  • Remove your teen’s TV from their bedroom. Kids love to watch TV and snack in their rooms while doing homework or relaxing after school. Taking out the TV will promote more time together as a family and curb the amount of time they spend watching TV.

This Dubai Hotel Jokes They're Stepping Up Security After Kim Kardashian Stole

She recently revealed she'll be coming back to Dubai in October, after having visited the Emirate twice before. But just in time for Kim Kardashian's visit, one Dubai hotel has said they're stepping up their security, and it's not for the reason you might think.

Instead of preparing for her arrival (and the impending fan chaos to go with it) by using burly minders to keep people out of the hotel, they've joked security will be keeping an eye on people inside Atlantis the Palm, after Kim stole a couple of bathrobes.

"Anticipating a rush of keen robe collectors descending onto the resort's signature suites, the Atlantis IT and security team have held urgent meetings this morning to plan the development of the latest Atlantis app 'Find My Bathrobe'……watch this space for more updates!" they joked in a statement.

Well, who can resist a little keepsake home when they've had a plush trip away? At least Atlantis see the funny side!

It all started when Kim admitted on her website that she swiped some stuff Atlantis, writing: "One of my fave things about staying in hotels are the big, fluffy white robes they put in the rooms. Anyone who's traveled with me knows I'm OBSESSED, lol.
I'll even admit, sometimes I take the robes from my fave accommodations, like the Atlantis in Dubai (So sorry! I stole two! LOL!) and the Montage in Beverly Hills, because they literally have the best ones."

Kim stayed in the resort's Signature Suites, which star's including the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and her sister Khloe Kardashian have enjoyed before. Prices start from $2572 per night (on stays before December 21) and each guest will receive $680 to spend around the resort.

It's no wonder, Kimmy couldn't part with her dressing gown. they are especially made for Atlantis by luxury French linen brand D. Porthault, and took 10 months to process the Aqua color that is exclusive to the resort. There are two styles to choose from but the Kimono is Kim's favorite in case you were wondering. The cost $306 (sorry, you can't actually buy them from the hotel) and feature cote de cheval weaving with green piping on the chest.

Kim's not the only star who has taken a liking to the brand, in fact, the likes of Charles de Gaulle, Sir Winston Churchill, President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy, Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and the Duchess of Windsor were fans.

EpiPen Alternatives: Mylan Raises EpiPen Prices 1000%, Families Seek Alternatives As Mylan’s Stock Drops

EpiPen alternativse

Mylan executives have been blasted by consumers for hiking the price of the lifesaving EpiPen over 1000% in an eight-year period. The EpiPen cost the average consumer just $56.64 when Mylan purchased the rights to the product back in 2007. However, as of the second quarter of 2016, the price of the EpiPen had skyrocketed to $608.61. With many allergy sufferers unable to afford the new prices, many families have sought out EpiPen alternatives.

Consumer Affairs reports that, despite only containing just $1 worth of medication, the EpiPen has increased in price consistently over the last eight years. The EpiPen was purchased by Mylan back in 2007 and was initially sold at a price point of $56.64. However, over the years, the company slowly increased prices as market demand for the product increased. The prices increased over 400% between 2007 and 2015 but apparently those increases weren’t enough for the company as they made two additional increases in May of 2015 and again in the second quarter of 2016. The final price of the EpiPen has landed at an astonishing $608.61.

Interestingly, though the company has tried to justify the price hikes, NBC News reports that Mylan executives were busy giving themselves hefty pay increases as the EpiPen prices skyrocketed. It was reported that Mylan CEO Heather Bresch’s pay increased from $2.4 million in 2007 to $18.9 million in 2015. Mylan relies heavily on the EpiPen for the majority of its profits with 40 percent of Mylan’s total profits coming from the EpiPen.

Therefore, the company likely doesn’t want consumers to learn that there are actually two safe alternatives to the EpiPen that won’t force families to choose between putting food on the table and having the lifesaving device on hand.

Kids With Food Allergies reports that there are two alternatives to the EpiPen that can be utilized by allergy sufferers.

“Several epinephrine auto-injectors are now available in the United States. There is also a generic version. Each contains the drug epinephrine. But, each device has its own unique set of instructions for use. Understanding the differences is important so that you get the device you want and you know how to properly use it.”

The alternatives are the Adrenaclick and the generic version of the Adrenaclick called USP auto-injector. The Adrenaclick and its generic form both inject lifesaving epinephrine into the patient at the time of anaphylaxis; however, they are administered somewhat differently.

According to the Pharmacy Times, while Adrenaclick and the USP auto-injector deliver the same lifesaving medication as the EpiPen, they are dispensed differently and patients should undergo proper training on how to utilize the new device if they previously used a different brand.

“For patients who have been using a particular brand, switching between products increases the likelihood that either the patient or caregiver may be confused when administering the injection, potentially leading to serious clinical outcomes, including death. For example, the EpiPen Auto-Injector requires the removal of only one cap to prepare for administration, while the authorized generic epinephrine autoinjector requires the removal of two caps. If the patient or caregiver attempts to prepare the authorized generic epinephrine auto-injector based on their experience with EpiPen Auto-Injector (removing only the second cap), they may not realize that the drug was not appropriately discharged. In order to avoid confusion, all patients and/or caregivers should be educated on epinephrine auto-injector devices and their proper administration techniques every time a prescription is picked up, confirming not only the instructions for use, but also the product being dispensed.”

While switching from the EpiPen to one of the other two devices may require new training for parents, caregivers and allergy sufferers, it can also result in a significantly less expensive epinephrine option. For example, the Adrenaclick is currently half the price of the EpiPen retailing at around $300. The USP Auto-Injector can be found at Walmart and Sam’s Club for just $142, meaning you could purchase four USP Auto-Injectors for the price of one EpiPen.

With parents expressing their outrage over the EpiPen price hikes and lawmakers saying they will be investigating the price increase, stock prices for Mylan are beginning to fall. MarketWatch notes that stock prices dropped 11% this week.

“Mylan Inc. MYL, -5.41% has been in focus for the past several sessions as lawmakers have criticized the drugmaker’s decision to raise the price of its EpiPens, widely used to treat anaphylactic shock. Shares sank 5.4%, and are off more than 11% this week.”

The drop in share prices will likely only continue as families switch to EpiPen alternatives such as Adrenaclick and the USP auto-injector and end their loyalty to the EpiPen brand. As Forbes pointed out, Mylan latched on to the fears of parents with children suffering from severe allergies, offering them free products and huge incentives to get their family stuck on the EpiPen brand. Bloomberg notes that Mylan is “a textbook case in savvy branding” with the EpiPen being marketed as the “only” option for families who care about their allergy-suffering child.

With the price hike making it impossible for some families to afford the injector, Mylan’s worst fears may come to fruition as families begin switching to Adrenaclick and its generic, undergoing new training and forgoing their old EpiPen loyalty.

What do you think about Mylan’s price hike of the EpiPen? Do you think the price increase will encourage families to look into EpiPen alternative such as Adrenaclick and the USP auto-injector?

Medical Malpractice: Errors Persist In Hospitals Despite Efforts To Improve

Medical malpractice: Error reports rising

Medical malpractice due to errors is unfortunately very common in a world where there is a race to get everything done faster. Hospitals such as Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, have known about it and attempted to tighten scrutiny in spotting errors. The problem hasn’t shown any sign of slowing though.

Thanks in part to the signing of the Affordable Care Act into law, more patients are flooding hospitals, and heavily populated areas are making preventable mistakes as a result. These are more than just miscalculated numbers or horribly scrawled words from medical professionals in a hurry. Sometimes a patient is given the wrong diagnosis and potentially given a medication which actually makes their health or condition worse.

The biggest potential for medical malpractice errors at Baystate appears to be due to unsanitary conditions, states the Boston Globe. Often enough, dialysis units are placed too close together and the risk of blood splattering on other patients rises. Disease is carried in the blood, and if a rogue drop finds its way into an open wound, a patient could actually leave the hospital with more problems than they arrived with.

In Massachusetts alone, errors rose 60 percent, and they were all preventable. In 2015, 26 patients were reported to have been given the wrong surgery or procedure. 52 errors were discovered in medications which seriously injured or killed patients, and 446 cases involved drugs and devices which had been contaminated.

Massachusetts area hospitals had reported 1,313 different errors last year, and the number only seems to be rising.

This year, 575 patients were notified that they may have been potentially exposed to infection in the Baystate Medical Center, at the request of state health inspectors. During a spot visit, inspectors found crowded conditions in the dialysis treatment unit. According to Dr. Douglas Salvador, vice president of medical affairs, no patients were known to have contracted Hepatitis B or C as a result of these medical malpractice conditions.

That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

In January, an inspection revealed dialysis units being unsanitary, having not been given proper infection control protocol. They had also been known to admit more than the limit of eight patients at a time, which would have given them proper distance to avoid cross-infection. Machines used for patients already diagnosed with Hepatitis B were not kept separate from the rest. The potential for medical malpractice lawsuits has been massive just this year.

Salvador has stated that steps have been taken to cut down on potential issues, though nurses aren’t always following the given protocols. “There are people who come in through the emergency department and need dialysis services, and the desire is to do one more and try to get them done. There were a lot of good intentions.”

Medical malpractice might have gone down as well, as reports have increased. If nobody knows there is a problem, it has a tendency to get worse, but awareness means someone is keeping track.

The Betsy Lehman Center’s executive director Barbara Fain has stated that there might not be enough data reported to truly analyze problems.

“That leaves out many other settings where we know serious medical errors take place, like doctors’ offices and nursing homes. Without more complete data it’s simply not possible to determine trends.”

A lot appears to still be wrong with the infection prevention protocols, and any hospital in a highly populated area could mirror the problems found at the Baystate Medical Center. If the nurses appear to be in a hurry, it might be worth it to find another facility and avoid medical malpractice.

13 Times Kylie Jenner's Dogs Were the Most Glamorous Members of the Kardashian Crew

I will say it loud and proud: I consider myself to be a respectable millennial with a handful of serious interests (I know stuff about important stuff, OK?) who simultaneously and wholeheartedly embraces all things Kardashian. Anyone who dares try to persuade me that a better form of relaxation exists than sitting in sweatpants listening to Kourtney tell Kim she's "seriously so rude" on repeat for hours on end is a damn liar. But of all the members of the Kardashian family, I have to say that Kylie is my favorite. Well, not Kylie - her pups. All five of them.

Kylie's perfect pups don't get nearly enough credit for being some of the most captivating members of the entire Kardashian crew. Norman, Bambi, Sophia, Penny, and Ernie spend their days sporting luxe sweaters and lounging around on fur rugs, controlling an Instagram account that rivals the following of any fashion blogger, yet their sisters always manage to steal the spotlight. Well, allow me to demonstrate why the Kardashians we should all be paying attention to are the four-legged ones.

Look through and behold every time Kylie Jenner's dogs proved to be the most fabulously glamorous of all the Kardashians.

Hepatitis A Outbreak In Virginia Linked To Frozen Strawberries Imported From Egypt And Used By Tropical Smoothie Cafe Franchise

Tropical Smoothie Cafe Strawberry smoothies linked to Hepatitis A outbreak

Officials from the Virginia Department of Health have stated that a cluster of recent outbreak of hepatitis A in the state may actually have been caused by the imported strawberries that the business franchise, Tropical Smoothie Cafe stores, have been receiving and using from Egypt.

The health officials have indicated that the results they have given to the public were obtained after genetic testing was conducted. The results showed that the Hepatitis A outbreak in Virginia had definitively been caused by a strain of the illness which is associated with several previous outbreaks linked to frozen strawberries which had been imported from Egypt. This outbreak has left 10 persons sick. Two of the cases are in eastern Virginia.

The smoothie chain in question, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, has recalled all of their strawberries which had been sourced from Egypt and are providing an alternative supplier. It is also believed though that other restaurants and suppliers may have also received the disease inducing frozen imported strawberries. Members of the public health industry, including the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have begun working on tracking the distribution of the frozen berries.

According to the Food Poisoning Bulletin the information about exactly when the infected strawberry smoothies were sold by the Tropical Smoothie Cafe is not available to the public as yet. In fact a press release done simply gives a general warning about the frozen strawberries and their possibility of causing a Hepatitis A infection.

“Anyone who consumed a smoothie with frozen strawberries at a restaurant within the last 50 days is encouraged to watch for symptoms of hepatitis A. If illness occurs, seek medical care and take steps to protect others from the infection.”

One of the reasons the timeline is so vague is because a person infected with Hepatitis A can actually take weeks to show any symptom and as such the berries which may have affected them could have been sold in a smoothie or perhaps even in various dishes and forms at other restaurants months ago.

The effectiveness of a vaccine for the Hepatitis A virus is only guaranteed if administered within two weeks of exposure. This means that only persons who consumed a smoothie which contained frozen strawberries from any Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Virginia between August 6, and 8, 2016 could still get a vaccination shot. However, persons who have had hepatitis A in the past or who have previously received the vaccine for it are immune and are not at risk of acquiring the infection again.

NBCWashington has stated that according to the smoothie chain’s website, in Virginia alone there are 96 Tropical Smoothie Cafe locations. At this time there is no information regarding if any Maryland locations have been affected by the outbreak.

The Hepatitis A virus is very contagious and has the possibility of being contracted through contaminated food and drink as well as through person-to-person contact, and through contact with surfaces and objects that are contaminated. The symptoms can include abdominal pain, fatigue, fever, jaundice, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, and clay-colored stools. People tend to get sick two weeks after being infected but the symptoms may not appear for about 50 days. Anyone who has developed any of the symptoms is being encouraged to visit their doctor.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe did release a statement regarding their role in the Hepatitis A outbreak in Virginia.

“Tropical Smoothie Cafe was notified by the Virginia Department of Health about several foodborne illnesses in the state linked to frozen strawberries sourced from Egypt. Our cafes and their food handling practices have not been implicated in any way – the health department believes this is a single product issue (strawberries) sourced from Egypt. Egyptian strawberries represent a fraction of our overall strawberries purchased, and were predominantly distributed to stores in the Virginia market. Today, our strawberries are primarily sourced from Mexico and California. However, in an abundance of caution, we voluntarily pulled all strawberries sourced from Egypt from every cafe in our system, not only the Virginia cafes. Our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of our guests and crew members and we will continue to cooperate with the health authorities.”

These Rising Stars Put the Girl Power Into MENA's Music Scene

Is That You Brad Pitt? Stars Narrate This New Documentary Featuring Dubai

With the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek being filmed in UAE recently, it's clear the country is fast-becoming a popular movie location. And this new trailer proves once again that the Dubai has a place on the big screen. Voyage of Time: Life's Journey is described as "An examination of the birth and death of the known universe" and of course the glimmering Emirate is included.

Watch the trailer to see the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, from a bird's eye view at night. Brad Pitt narrates the 40-minute IMAX version of the documentary and is also named as one of the producers. Helmed and written by Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line), you can hear Brad talk about "the past, the future, the present… experience the unfolding of time. The universe, billions of years in the making. Our journey… our destiny."

Brad isn't the only familiar voice you can hear in the documentary; the feature length version is narrated by actress Cate Blanchett.

The film will debut at Toronto and Venice Film Festivals in September, then it will be released in Australia and the USA in October. So far no dates for the GCC have been announced.

Brad is no stranger to the Middle East, as well as having a home in the region, the motion picture favorite filmed his comedy flick War Machine in Abu Dhabi.

Marlon Wayans Looks Like He Had Way Too Much Fun in Abu Dhabi

You can't come to the UAE without trying the traditional Ayala dance…just ask Will Smith or Tyrese Gibson. And this weekend it was comedic actor Marlon Wayans's turn to don a Kandura and bust a move.

The 44-year-old – whose famous siblings include Damon, Dwayne, Keenan and Shawn – was performing a stand-up show at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, but the stage wasn't the only place where his humor shone.

Marlon, star of Little Man, Scary Movie and White Chicks, could be seen getting involved in a routine with his new Emirati friends, while his pals from home captured the moment and couldn't help but giggle. From videos posted by Abu Dhabi events, it looks like the star enjoyed afternoon tea in the capital and didn't worry about keeping his whites clean as he used the fabric to slide around the city. Marlon also made a stop in Dubai.

With so much energy, it's no wonder he sold out his gig!

Photographic Evidence That Jennifer Lopez Has Not Aged a Day

If our lives depended on arranging photos of Jennifer Lopez in chronological order, we would fail. Though her style and hair color have certainly evolved through the years, her face and overall beauty have not changed - and we're starting to need more than her usual "sleep is very important" answer here. Perhaps we should also consult Thalia, while we're at it.

The sexy multihyphenate has long attracted theories that she's aging in reverse - or, you know, some sort of immortal vampire - so to further explore that argument, we've rounded up photos of her over the last few decades. The results are pretty telling, if we do say so ourselves.

Can Cracking Your Knuckles Actually Be Good For You? A New Study May Surprise You!

Can Cracking Your Knuckles Actually Be Good For You? New Study May Surprise You!|Photo by Bruno Vincent/Getty Images

If you love to crack your knuckles, but avoid it because you always thought it would eventually cause arthritis, you may want to think again! A recent study claims that cracking your knuckles may actually be good for you. In fact, this may be exercise for your fingers.

Robert D. Boutin, M.D., professor of radiology at University of California, Davis (UC Davis) Health System said that the team began the study because “It’s extremely common for joints to crack, pop and snap.” They were curious. They wanted to find out if the knuckle cracking sound was the result of a bubble being created in the joint or if a bubble was popping in the joint.

“We were interested in pursuing this study because there’s a raging debate about whether the knuckle-cracking sound results from a bubble popping in the joint or from a bubble being created in the joint.”

The study by the RSNA, the Radiological Society of North America included participants from all sides of the knuckle cracking spectrum. The study included participants that never cracked their knuckles all the way to those who did it up to 20 times per day, for as many as 40 years in a row. The Orthopedists who conducted the study knew nothing about each participant, whether they cracked or not. As they were not aware who was actually was a knuckle cracker, they treated each participant identically. They checked for range of motion, grip strength, laxity of each MPJ both before and after an ultrasound.

As each participant tried to crack their knuckles, the Orthopedists used a small transducer. This sonographer records video images of 400 MPJs. In addition, the sonographer captured static images of each MPJ. This was done before they tried cracking their knuckles and then after they successfully cracked their knuckles. This way, the Orthopedists could compare between the two.

Searching for a visual image through the ultrasound, the radiologists looked for proof of any physical change after the participant’s knuckles were cracked. This proof occurred in 62 out of the 400 sonographs made. From the study, Dr. Boutin said that this is when they saw something quite unexpected: they saw a bright flash when the knuckle was cracked.

“What we saw was a bright flash on ultrasound, like a firework exploding in the joint. It was quite an unexpected finding.”

Using the flashes on the ultrasound images, the radiologists were able to identify the joints with audible cracks with at least 94 percent specificity.

“There have been several theories over the years and a fair amount of controversy about what’s happening in the joint when it cracks. We’re confident that the cracking sound and bright flash on ultrasound are related to the dynamic changes in pressure associated with a gas bubble in the joint.”

Dr. Boutin advised that more research is needed to determine what comes first: the flash of light or the cracking sound. With this small test group, the researchers did not find any sort of disability, pain or even swelling by the knuckle-cracking group. In addition, there was no difference in grip strength from the variety of participants, some who were knuckle crackers and others that didn’t crack their knuckles.

Despite their discovery that there was not a disability discovered after examining knuckle cracking participants, the group decided that additional research needs to be conducted.

“We found that there was no immediate disability in the knuckle crackers in our study, although further research will need to be done to assess any long-term hazard – or benefit – of knuckle cracking.”
