Adult oysters can filter between 20 and 50 gallons of water each day, making them critical to clean water in many environments.
To demonstrate what how important the mollusks are to the health of our rivers and oceans, the Florida Oceanographic Society put two aquariums side by side for 90 minutes. Both aquariums are filled with the same dirty water, but the aquarium on the right has oysters in it.
