Although BAE might be popular slang to describe someone’s sweetheart — or the person they put “before anybody else” — BAE also stands for bariatric arteriale embolization. Bariatric arteriale embolization is a new type of weight loss procedure that’s less invasive than other methods of weight loss — and could be just as effective.
As reported by NBC News, BAE helped 48-year-old Cheryl Denby drop 30 pounds in three months. Cheryl reported that she had tried plenty of methods to lose weight — but she was still hesitant to undergo the knife. Denby was gaining weight and was obese and unhappy as the weight caused a plethora of problems and issues that negatively affected her health.
What’s good for folks like Cheryl is that the new bariatric arteriale embolization or BAE procedure that was created by radiologists offered a different option for people who want to lose weight — but don’t want to get gastric bypass procedures. Even if they are candidates for gastric bypass surgeries, the bariatric arteriale embolization can be a different alternative.
Cheryl was selected as part of a group of seven people offered the BAE option in a pilot trial of the procedure. Denby reported that her food cravings reduced, and she adopted a healthier diet as a result. BAE helped Cheryl drop 30 pounds in three months.

The BAE process involves a catheter being threaded into the groin area or the wrist area in order to access the blood vessels near the stomach. That’s where the blood vessels and their blood supply are blocked off with tiny beads in order to trick the person to not feeling as hungry. The hormone called ghrelin is called the “hunger hormone,” and BAE helps ghrelin get reduced, and therefore, hunger cravings are reduced as well.
They are beads that have been used in other surgeries for many years — and placing them near the stomach’s blood vessels can make patients feel 80 percent less hungry.
The BAE procedure takes less than one hour and doesn’t require much recovery time. Successful weight loss results are being reported by BAE patients, with weight loss happening after the first month, and several months afterward, as the reduction in hunger helps them not overeat.
For Cheryl, the BAE procedure has made a big difference in her life.
“I was in pain most days, my back, my knees, and it was hard to do daily things like laundry, grocery store, just getting up to get dressed. I used to joke with my friend I just want to be able to tie my shoes without cutting off my air supply. That was a big deal, so I was unhappy. They take a whole multi-faceted approach and they don’t just put me out there. They let me know that this still takes work. I was so ready to give up and now I feel so hopeful. I can beat this. Have fun without feeling that weight that this is literally emotionally and physically that I felt was holding me back.”
As reported by Northern California News, BAE helped patients experience weight loss amounts up to 13 percent in the six months following the BAE procedure.
“This is essentially designed to be an outpatient procedure that takes under an hour with very little recovery time and very high safety profile. In our patients, we saw 6% weight loss at one month, 9.5% weight loss of 3 months and 13% weight loss at 6 months.”
It wasn’t simply about only obtaining the BAE procedure and then eating whatever the patients craved. Instead, the BAE patients were taught how to change their eating habits and incorporate exercise as well into their lives, as needed. The BAE patients were taught new tips via a weight management program as well.
