Ariana Grande Says She Knows 'Break Free' is Ungrammatical, Blames Max Martin

f you have a problem with Ariana Grande's grammatically erroneous lyrics on her Zedd collabo "Break Free" you might be surprised to learn that the 21-year-old singer is completely on your side.

"I fought co-producer Max Martin on it the whole time," Grande tells Time magazine. "'I am not going to sing a grammatically incorrect lyric, help me God!' Max was like, 'It's funny -- just do it!' I know it's funny and silly, but grammatically incorrect things make me cringe sometimes."

In "Break Free," Grande sings, "Now that I've become who I really are" as well as, "I only wanna die alive," both of which make little sense.

But after some back and forth, Grande learned an ironclad rule in the pop music world: You don't win a fight against Max Martin.

Now she's grown to enjoy the humor in the song. "I need to shake it off and let it go and be a little less rigid and old," Grande told Time. "I'm like, 90. I need to not be that old."
