oitnb and conan cause debate

laverne surely didn’t intend to cause such a stir! conan o’brien recently hosted an orange is the new black themed episode on his late-night show. amidst chit-chat with uzo aduba about her family’s reaction to her rising star, there was a cold-open skit featuring laverne cox, as sophia burset, and conan o’brien.

laverne plays conan’s newly-hired beauty consultant, giving ample advice from demographic targeting to transition-therapy. the skit swims in safe water making oft-repeated jokes about conan’s hair. ”i don’t know who did this wig for you, but you need to get your money back!” conan holds back a smirk. ”people are afraid of clowns,” quips laverne. ”i’m afraid just looking at you!”

laverne, as sophia, takes another step by complimenting conan. “you know coco, i really do admire you. you really are an inspiration — the very first transgendered talk-show host!” conan doesn’t identify as transgendered as far as anyone is aware, and sensibility dictates that we shouldn’t assume anything about the way someone speaks. nonetheless, laverne goes further as conan protests.

”i’m not transgendered!”

”but your voice is higher that mine. you telling me you’re not transitioning?”

”no! this is my real voice! i’m a man!”

”mhm, whatever you say, bruce jenner.”

later, the writer of the sketch posted his story online. laverne ad-libbed the bruce jenner line, he posts. as part of his explanation, we learn that laverne wasn’t forced to read anything that she wasn’t comfortable with. the sketch was even changed to remove a reference to hormones.

knowing that the skit was written to be read by sophia, and not laverne, some still find a poor taste in their mouth. are the lowest-common-denominator jokes about trans issues a step forward or back?

is this problematic, ontd? why or why not?
