Anti-Vaccine ‘Anti-Vaxxer’ Movement Responsible for 2016 Arizona Measles Outbreak? Measles Spread from Illegal Immigrants to Americans

An illegal alien in Eloy Detention Center was the first patient in the 2016 Arizona measles outbreak.

A measles outbreak in Arizona now has eleven confirmed cases, according to CBS News, and the risk of more infections is probable. Health officials are concerned because of the popularity of the anti-vaxxer, or anti-vaccine movement, where some parents refuse to immunize their children against measles and other diseases.

The measles outbreak began at Eloy Detention Center, a federal detention center in Eloy, AZ, for undocumented immigrants. There are now 11 confirmed cases of measles; seven inmates and four workers are infected with the potentially deadly disease. Eloy Detention Center, a privately owned facility run by CCA, has stopped accepting new inmates until the disease is under control.

Arizona health officials, said the Arizona Republic, warned of more than a dozen places in Pinal and Maricopa counties where people may have been exposed to measles. Measles is highly contagious.

The outbreak began in a detention center for undocumented immigrants. The first known victim was an illegal immigrant, but it is unknown whether he was exposed to measles in Mexico or the USA. Some people are blaming illegal aliens for bringing measles to Arizona, but vaccinations in Mexico are comparable or better than in the United States, according to the Center for Immigration Studies.

The Arizona Department of Health Services is working to identify people who may have been exposed outside Eloy Detention Facility. They’ve encouraged people who may have visited any of the identified locations to be aware of measles symptoms. Symptoms include fever, cough, red, watery eyes, and runny nose, followed by a rash. White spots called Koplik’s spots may form inside the mouth, usually two or three days after other symptoms begin. A red, blotchy rash begins on the face and moves down the body, usually three to five days after the other symptoms. The rash generally lasts five to six days. However, symptoms of measles do not normally develop until 10-12 days after exposure. Sometimes symptoms do not appear for up to three weeks after exposure. Because measles is an airborne virus, it is easily spread. People with measles can infect others for approximately a week, from four days before the rash begins, when they may not realize yet that they are infected, to four days after the start of the rash.

Arizona is home to anti-vaccine advocate Dr. Jack Wolfson. As explained by CNN, Dr. Wolfson was being investigated by the Arizona Medical Board because of his anti-vaccine stance. He claims getting measles and other diseases and establishing a natural immunity is healthier than being vaccinated because of the chemicals in vaccines.

We should be getting measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, these are the rights of our children to get it.

The Inquisitr has warned before of the dangers of not vaccinating children to prevent measles. Before the development of a measles vaccine, the USA had four million cases of measles per year. Although most people think of measles as a minor children’s disease, prior to the vaccine 500 people died from measles every year in this country alone. Thousands suffered major complications: deafness, blindness, brain damage. According to an article published in the journal Science last year, measles can also leave survivors at increased risk for mortality from other diseases for two years or more. The last death from measles in the United States was in 2015; it was the first death from measles in this country since 2003.

The Center for Disease Control declared measles eradicated in the United States in 2000. Unfortunately, the disease didn’t stay eradicated. Travelers overseas brought measles into the United States and exposed people who had never been vaccinated.

Dr. Cara Christ, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, warned of the dangers of measles.

It’s so contagious people can catch it after going into a room two hours after someone with measles has been in it.

Dr. Christ admitted she expected to see measles spread in Arizona.

We expect to see more. How big it’s going to get, we don’t have any idea at this point.

Kim Kardashian's Guide to Slang is The Dictionary You Never Knew You Wanted

For the Kardashians, it seems, a passion for academia runs in the family.

If you thought that Kris Jenner's soon-to-be-opened business school would be the family's first and last foray into the world of higher education, you thought wrong.

Last week, Kim made her own mark by authoring her own dictionary...of slang words that she and her sisters use on the show. The dictionary was released exclusively on her app, so only those who pay the US $2.99 monthly fee have access to this exclusive content.

We've all heard the sisters scream "Bible!" on the show, but what about the rest of their unique and sometimes indecipherable terms?

Desperate to get the inside scoop on Kim's specific vernacular, I paid the $2.99 and have been happily devouring her dictionary since.

What did I learn? Well, first of all, I now have serious vocab goals, and they're anything but basic-- and soon, you will too.

Here are some of our favorites from the dictionary. You're about to be schooled by Kim K.

WAVE: The current trend, what's cool right now; what all the cool kids are super into at the moment.

IN A SENTENCE: That's the new wave!

TURNT: Not to be confused with "lit," "turnt" is used to describe the atmosphere of a party, event or group of individuals. A party is turnt when the vibes are lifted and participants are all having an amazing time.

IN A SENTENCE: Man, Khloé's birthday party was so turnt last night!

BOSS: A person who is on top of her game, generally killing it.

IN A SENTENCE: Kylie's lip kits always sell out instantly. She's such a boss!!!

SUS: When someone is acting shady; short for "suspect" or "suspicious."

IN A SENTENCE: Where's Khloé? She was acting real sus last night.

SNATCHED: A term referring to good looks, fierceness or something good.

IN A SENTENCE: Mario gave me the most snatched brows of all time last night. So good!

Vanessa Paradis Pens a Letter Supporting Johnny Depp: "He Has Never Been Physically Abusive"

It appears not everyone is happy about Amber Heard's domestic violence allegations against Johnny Depp. In a letter obtained by TMZ, the actor's ex-partner Vanessa Paradis is coming to his defense. The note, which was written and signed by Vanessa on May 27, reads as follows:

"To whom it may concern,

Johnny Depp is the father of my two children, he is a sensitive, loving and loved person, and I believe with all my heart that these recent allegations being made are outrageous. In all the years I have known Johnny, he has never been physically abusive with me and this looks nothing like the man I lived with for 14 wonderful years.

Five Tips To Reclaim Your Health, Weight Loss Made Simple

5 tips for effective weight loss

We’ve all been there. You decide you are tired of being fat. You are tired of nothing ever fitting you. You are dedicated to the change in your diet. You think it has to be successful. I am trying very hard right. There are things you may be doing that can harm your chance that the diet will be successful.

Skipping Meals

It is NEVER a good idea to skip a meal. Many people will skip either breakfast or dinner. They will say they can sacrifice the food to lose weight. What this does it triggers you metabolism to slow down and INCREASES the fat production. The best thing you can do is to eat every three to four hours throughout the day. When choosing your foods, it is a good idea to pick foods that are not only low calorie but are good whole foods.

Drinking Fruit JuicesSoda

Let face it; many people believe drinking fruit juice is a healthy choice. Most commercial fruit juice is packed with sugar. They are also packed full of added ingredients. Most of the time drinking a fruit juice is no different than drinking regular soda. Many people also fall into the diet soda trap. They believe it is right for them because it has no calories. The complete opposite is true. It is terrible for you. It is full of fake nutrients and chemicals. Oddly enough, the better choice would be regular soda.

Changing Your Diet Too Fast

This is one of the most common mistakes. You are excited. You decide I will lose 20 pounds this month. After all, on The Biggest Loser, they lose 40 pounds a month average. You throw away all the junk food. You eat salads, veggies and fruits only. Then it happens. Late at night you overeat. You will likely eat a lot of calories. The cause of this is changing your diet too fast. The way to avoid this is first to stop eating sweets or quit sodas. After you do that, tackle exercise. After implementing training, add more fruits and vegetables. Remember, losing weight is not a sprint race, it is a marathon.

Not Eating Enough Calories

Not eating enough calories is just as bad as eating too many. It is. What happens is if you live on say 600 calories a day for an extended time, you body will begin to breakdown. Not even debating the Starvation Mode Myth, the fact is no one has a Basal Metabolic Rate of 600. It would be a minimum of 1200 most likely. In fact, a nine-month-old baby needs more calories than 500-600 per day. The trick is learning which calories to eat and finding a balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fats.

Choosing The Wrong Foods

It is not possible to feed an active body on junk foods. You would not be able to run a marathon if you eat pizza, cakes, and all the wrong foods. It is important you start feeding yourself as you are an athlete. Eat lean meats, beans, brown rice, spaghetti made with whole grain, and all the fresh veggies and fruits you can eat.

Changing your diet is never easy. It is best if done slow to ensure a life change is completed. Stick with it and expect setbacks. If you are consistent, you will reach your goal weight and be so much healthier when you get there. The three primary focuses should be eating less junk food, eat more natural, whole foods and move your body much, much more often.

Caitlin Flora Tells Her Story: She Lost 182 Pounds And Has Never Felt Better About Herself–Read Her Story

9701f7759a4c500875226fb311d5f6b7

Caitlin Flora’s story is much like many overweight/obese women. She struggled with her weight early. Because her classmates made fun of her as an elementary student, she begins to develop an unhealthy relationship with food at a young age. As a 160 lb. 12-year-old, her peers continually teased her. She said the way she was able to soothe herself was destructive by sneaking in cupcakes and junk food in her room, so no one saw her eat or how much she was consuming.

By the time she was a young age of 16; she had moved out of her home and dropped out of high school. To make ends meet, she accepted a job at a fast food joint, which gave her unlimited access to oily fatty foods. She learned at a young age, to deal with the stress she would eat. Food became her best friend; only it didn’t love her back. At the age 18, he was an astonishing 280 pounds. Even more discouraging, in 2008, before she decided to take charge of her health, she weighed in at a shocking 332 lb.

Her turning point was when her friend who she had not seen in years asked her when her baby was due; she was not pregnant. She said she remembered being embarrassed and knew she had to do something. She went home and emptied all the junk food in the garbage replacing it with ‘healthy choice’ meals and Slimfast shakes. She said this was the one way she knew to control her eating by giving herself portions she should be eating.

Exercising was never something she felt comfortable doing. She started slowly with home exercise videos. She said at first it was hard, and she was out of breath often. Slowly, it was easier and easier to the point she was able to buy more challenging videos and keep up with them.

In Jan. 2010, she had met her first milestone, 100-pound loss weighing in at 232. She hit a plateau and wasn’t sure what to do to get past it. She decided to add weight lifting to her five times a week cardio sessions and was able to shed over 18 months another 82 pounds. Weighing in at 150, she really wanted to meet her goal weight of 145. To do this, she has implemented high-intensity workout routines such as P90X.

She said she knew the journey would be a long one to lose the weight. While her journey is five years long now, she said it took her 28 years to gain all that weight. She developed tips to help others lose weight.

1) Connect with others- She used weight loss groups on Facebook to help support her along the way. She said when she felt down; virtual friends helped her.

2) Healthy snacks- She used smart snacks such as eggs or a hand full of nuts. In fact, better yet, don’t buy any junk foods, and then there will be no temptation.

3) Weigh monthly- Too many people are scale obsessed. Instead, she weighed in once a month, just to check her numbers. Her weight told her if she was on the right track or if she needed to reduce calorie intake more.

4) Fluids are your friend- if plain water is not your thing, add mint leaves or fruit pieces to your water. Water doesn’t need to be boring and can help fill you up.

5) Utilize apps- Smartphone’s can help you stay connected to your fitness goals. You can track your food intake, exercise calories and remain in touch with fitness pals all with the touch of a button on your phone.

How much weight have you lost? Who inspired you to begin your journey? Have you researched your goal weight?

Tips To Eat Vegan On A Thifty Budget

Tips to buy thifty vegan foods

When deciding to eat a vegan diet, it may be hard to imagine you can do it on a strict budget. It can be done, though, with careful planning. With dedication and clipping coupons and store flyers, you can have a good game plan and learn the ins and outs of shopping on a budget, even for vegan foods.

Get Nutty

Many stores have “buy one get one free” deals on peanut butter. It is not uncommon to find a coupon to use in addition to the store offer. Peanut butter is the stable of many vegan’s diets, especially those on a budget.

Veg Out

Vegetables should make up about 60% of not only a vegan or vegetarian’s diet but all diets. The vegetables are better consumed free but, if money is an issue you can buy frozen or canned to save money. Canned fruit generally should be avoided as it’s loaded with sugar or heavy syrup. This process adds calories and more sugar. It is better if at all possible, to avoid canned fruit.

Say No To Soda

No one needs to drink soda, not even diet soda. In fact, if trying to lose weight or watch your diet, it might even hurt you weight loss attempts. Water will help hydrate your body and keep you feeling wide-eyed. It will also help you feel full so you will eat much less. Everyone should aim to drink about half their body weight in ounces per day. The average person weighs about 150 pounds, so they should drink about 80 or so ounces of water per day.

Pass The Beans, Please

Beans have so much protein and provide healthy carbohydrates. There are so many different types of beans, with a huge variety of taste. You can add potatoes, and it will make a complete meal. A good way to prepare beans are to add tomatoes and onion. It is full of flavor without being spicy or overpowering.

Many people avoid vegan diets because they think they don’t have the money to eat healthy foods. Eating a balanced diet can be done even on a strict budget. Granted, it can be much more challenging, but it isn’t totally out of the question, You just have to get creative.

Jillian Michaels once said that if something is important to you, you will make time for it. If it isn’t important, you will constantly make excuses why you can’t meet that goal. This rings true for the vegan lifestyle. Make time for it. Learn the ropes of bargain shopping. In the end, you will feel elated that not only did you take steps to eat more healthy, but you learned how to be a thrifty shopper. It’s a win-win scenario.

There is no reason avoid a vegan diet because of finances. So many people use the excuse I cannot afford it, so they keep shoveling junk foods. You can afford it if you omit all the fancy vegan substitution foods. Just eat real foods, fruits, vegetable, and nuts. You might be surprised how much less you spend when you stop buying milk, cheese, and meats.

Vegan readers, how did you get started eating meat free? Did you dive right in it, or ease in little by little? Do you eat any substitution foods like black bean burgers [Bocaburgers] or the imitation cheese?

Jillian Michaels Reveals 4 Hot Tips For Lasting Weight Loss

Jillian Michaels Dishes 7 Tips For Lasting Weight Loss

If there’s one celebrity trainer that isn’t afraid to be candid about weight loss–It’s Jillian Michaels. She became a household name when she was cast as a coach on the hit reality TV show, The Biggest Loser. Today, Jillian has struggled like most mothers to maintain her work and home balance and prided herself on being as real as possible with her fans and followers. Self talked with the fitness guru and Michaels gave them four tips that will help you maintain your weight loss, and stay fit.

Jillian said that it is never okay to overeat, not even on healthy foods. Healthier foods will fuel your body better than junk foods will, but the bottom line is a calorie is still a calorie, even if it is a vegetable.

“Weight maintenance and weight loss are about how much you are taking in. I don’t care how healthy a food is, don’t overeat. “

It is important to count your calories but knows that you cannot do it forever. Michael considers it a necessity at first. At some point, Jillian explains you have to trust yourself enough to stop counting calories. If you have trouble figuring out how many calories are in your foods, there are plenty of apps that can do the math for you. Jillian suggested My Fitness Pal because it is simple to use, and best of all–free.

Michaels explained that it’s not just about calories in calories out, it’s also about nutrients. It’s important to know the foods you eat and to drop the labels. Forget eating vegan, Paleo or any other weight loss trend. Jillian’s simple advice is to eat real foods, with no MSG, corn syrup, or nitrates. If you do that, Jillian assures you, the weight will either come off.

Michaels noted that if you aren’t consistent with your exercise, it will affect your waistline. While exercise is only a small part of your weight loss success, if you have too many “lazy days” you won’t feel like being as active. Michaels explains that being consistent is a battle for most people, but will help you feel much better in general.

Sometimes it’s not enough to do the motions and exercise. You should choose workouts that you enjoy doing. Jillian chuckles that she wouldn’t want to do a 45-minute video of activity that she hates. Michaels explains there is no reason to do that either with so many options. Another tips she found useful was to keep challenging yourself to increase your intensity every two weeks. It’ll keep your body workling hard in every single workout you do.

Probably the most important reason Jillian gave was to know why being healthy and fit is important to you. It’s not enough just to know the reason; you need to write it down, and place it somewhere that you can see often.

“Identify your why and really go into detail. Not like, I want beter health. I don’t know what that means. Maybe it’s I want to keep up with my two toddlers Or, I want to run the New York City Marathon. Those kind of things, Post them everywhere and emotionally connect to your goals. Because let’s be honest–Pizza will taste better than chicken any day of the week. However, whatever it is that matters to you, if you care about it, it’s going to matter more to you than a slice of greasy pizza.”

The bottom line is you cannot live a full life on a super-duper strict diet. Sometimes you may want a hamburger or a slice of pizza. And, that’s okay. It’s okay to have a cheat meal, as long as you have a relatively healthy diet otherwise.

Breast Cancer Easier To Avoid Than Originally Thought Says New Study

Paleo Diet Is The Most Searched Diet Plan, Research Say Lose Up To 5 Lbs. A Week– Safe And Effective Weight Loss Method?

Paleo Diet Is The Hottest Weight Loss Trend For Three Years In A Row, Research Claims--Lose Up To 5 Lbs. A Week

Researchers from Edith Cowan University recruited 39 women to test how much weight is possible following the Paleo diet. Half the women were assigned a typical diet, with no restrictions. The other half followed the Paleo diet. The results were astonishing. The Paleo diet proved why it is one of the best diet trends out there and solidifies that it could be an excellent way to jumpstart any weight loss plan.

The Paleo diet consists of eating eggs, fruits, lean meats, nuts, and vegetables. Dairy, grains, and legumes are not allowed. The participants had to eat the diet plan for four weeks to measure accurate data.

The results were shocking–Paleo diet followers lost almost three times the weight of the participants that at a regular diet plan. The group that followed the regular none restrictive diet lost an average of 1.6 percent of their body weight. The Paleo followers lost an average of 4.6 percent of their body weight, University Herald reports.

The focus group that ate a regular diet was told to increase their water, fruits, and vegetable intake, and eat plenty of whole grain foods. The scientist saw no difference in the cardiovascular effect of the two diets, despite reservations about the Paleo diet cutting out several food groups from the diet.

People on the Paleo diet lose weight so quickly because they cut their calories down to an alarming amount. To compensate for a lower calorie intake, the diet calls for a much higher amount of protein to trick your body into not feeling hungry. The researchers have reservations about how safe Paleo would be long-term because of the lack of calories and the above average protein recommended by the plan.

“There is much more to health than merely weight loss. That is why dietary patterns that prohibit entire food groups could possibly impact overall health due to a decrease in food selection. Therefore further research is necessary, in healthy subjects to evaluate the long-term health implications.”

The Paleo diet is not a new diet–it’s been around for centuries. It has many names such as caveman diet, primal diet, and hunter-gather diet. If the food weren’t available for the cavemen to eat, it would be off-limits. It eliminates dairy, legumes, whole grains, and sugar from your diet. There have been many concerns about the plan, touting that it could lead to vitamin deficiency. The Paleo gurus maintain the diet plan is a safe and efficient manner, not only to lose weight but to eat for the rest of your life.

“By following these nutritional guidelines, we put our diet more in line with the evolutionary pressures that shaped our current genetics, which in turn positively influences health and well-being.”

The problem with the Paleo diet is that the experts don’t agree about the benefits of the eating plan. Many of them cannot say for sure if the reason the cavemen were healthy was their diet. We have more disease than the cavemen had in their time, so it’s impossible to say if their style of eating could cure our diseases. One point all the experts agree on is that there needs to be more research done to determine if Paleo could cure high blood pressure, diabetes, and other weight-related diseases.

One of the best advantages to beginning a Paleo diet plan is the resources available to it. Paleo is the most searched diet plan on the internet, and it has an unyielding community [online groups, social media, and meet-up groups]. It’s one of those plans that if you ever have a question, just post to your social media accounts, and soon, you will have an answer.

Britons Warned Against Visiting Disney World Over Zika Virus Concerns, Told To Avoid Southern United States

U.S. Not ready for Zika virus, though spread is probable

A leading British health expert is warning Britons to “think twice” about visiting Disney World and other popular U.S. tourist destinations this year over fear of a Zika virus outbreak. With mosquito season upon the United States, Professor Jimmy Whitworth of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine claims that the U.S. is ripe for a Zika virus outbreak in its southern states and that pregnant women and couple’s hoping to conceive should avoid travel to certain popular travel destinations within the United States.

The Daily Mail reports that many Britons are being told to reconsider holidays to the United States as the Zika virus is slated to arrive in numerous states across the south. Included in the area of concern is Florida, a popular tourist destination which includes ample beaches and Disney World. Professor Whitworth notes that Britons hoping to travel to Disney World, the Florida Keys, Miami or other areas in the southern United States should “think twice” as Zika will likely spread in those areas heavily as mosquito season approaches.

The concerns have also been expressed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States. The CDC notes that information regarding the Zika virus is “a bit scarier than we initially thought.” Therefore, the health officials are asking for $1.9 billion in Zika virus funding to be secured to combat the spread of the virus as new evidence suggests that the mosquitoes carrying the disease are found in 30 states, not just 12 as originally thought.

USA Today reports that Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, calls the latest Zika virus reports “not reassuring” and has expressed concern about the potential for an outbreak in the United States.

“Most of what we’ve learned is not reassuring. Everything we look at with this virus seems to be a bit scarier than we initially thought.”

Schuchat notes that Zika has already been spread locally in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and America Samoa but it likely won’t end there. The CDC reports that 30 of the 50 U.S. states may be affected by local cases of Zika virus as the Aedes aegypti species, the species carrying the virus, has been found in more states than previously expected. Prior to the latest reports, it was believed that only 12 states would be locally affected by Zika and that it would be heavily isolated. The new reports indicate this will not be the case and that the threat is larger than initially thought.

In addition to the Aedes aegypti species being located in more states than expected, the virus itself is also more sever than health officials once believed. The most severe risks are presented to pregnant women as a host of birth defects have been linked to Zika virus including microcephaly, blindness and premature birth. Other studies suggest that adults may be at increased risk of Guillain-Barre syndrome, which can cause paralysis. Zika has also been linked to a second autoimmune disorder called acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. It resembles multiple sclerosis and involves a swelling of the brain and spinal cord.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says he is not an alarmist but that he is concerned about the threats that Zika poses to public health.

“I’m not an alarmist and most of you who know me know that I am not, but the more we learn about the neurological aspects, the more we look around and say this is very serious.”

Though the Zika virus is most commonly transferred by mosquito bite, it can also be transmitted sexually. With concerns surrounding the spread of Zika virus growing, do you think British health officials will continue to warn Britons to avoid travel to the United States?

A side effect of antibiotics, used to kill pathogenic bacteria, is that they also kill gut bacteria, but now, thanks to a new study on mice, scientist think that antibiotics may have another sinister side effect: They seem to also affect brain cells. The new study gives scientists reason to believe that antibiotics that are strong enough and used long enough to kill off most of our gut bacteria may also prevent the growth of new brain cells in the hippocampus. This is a section of the brain that is associated with memory, emotion and spatial navigation.

Extended use of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections or reduce colonization might impact brain function, according to senior author Susanne Asu Wolf of the Max-Delbrueck-Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin, Germany. The new study was published in Cell Reports. The researchers involved in the study say they think they know what the link between antibiotic use and the brain might be. Wolf says that about a decade ago, they figured out that the immune system has the ability to influence the health and growth of brain cells, according to T cell research. Now, they have discovered that a type of white blood cell that acts as a communicator between the brain and the immune system seems to be the key to this link.

Science Daily explained that mice who were treated with enough antibiotics to wipe out intestinal microbes showed signs of a loss of neurogenesis in a section of their hippocampus that produces new brain cells throughout a person’s life. Treated mice also performed worse in memory tests. Interestingly, the mice also had “a lower level of white blood cells (specifically monocytes) marked with Ly6Chi in the brain, blood, and bone marrow.”

The researchers decided to see if the Ly6Chi monocytes were involved in the changes in neurogenesis and memory. They also compared mice that had not been given antibiotics to mice that had healthy gut bacteria levels, but low levels of Ly6Chi. Mice with low Ly6Chi levels had the same memory and neurogenesis problems as mice that had lost healthy gut bacteria. When the Ly6Chi levels were restored in mice treated with antibiotics, memory and neurogenesis improved.

“For us it was impressive to find these Ly6Chi cells that travel from the periphery to the brain, and if there’s something wrong in the microbiome, Ly6Chi acts as a communicating cell,” Wolf said, adding that mice who were then given probiotics actually were able to regain memory and begin creating new brain cells again. “The magnitude of the action of probiotics on Ly6Chi cells, neurogenesis, and cognition impressed me.”

Here is where it really get interesting and bypasses any existing scientific notions. Probiotics helped the mice’s brains, but fecal transplants used to repair the gut did not help the brain.

“It was surprising that the normal fecal transplant recovered the broad gut bacteria, but did not recover neurogenesis,” says Wolf, according to a press release. “This might be a hint towards direct effects of antibiotics on neurogenesis without using the detour through the gut. To decipher this we might treat germ free mice without gut flora with antibiotics and see what is different.”

Wolf says that they think that the immune cell link to the brain may have an affect on mood and psychiatric symptoms as well. She says that future studies will examine the ability of probiotic treatment to affect the outcomes of these disorders and symptoms, which mirrors the hypotheses of the alternative health field that have existed for years.

The article in Cell got into further detail that has been overlooked by most of the science media coverage, explaining that additionally, the “evidence indicates that the microbiota-brain relationship plays a crucial role in the development of metabolic and mental diseases.”

Take An Apirin A Day For Protection Against Cancer? Experts Claim Taking It Daily Can Save Your Life

New Study Proves That Aspirin Is A Wonder Drug, Experts Claim Taking It Daily Can Save Your Life

An aspirin a day keeps the doctor away?

It’s not a secret that aspirin is a wonder drug and has many uses from a highly effective pain medicine to being able to stop a heart attack in its tracks. New research has uncovered many other ways aspirin can treat your everyday ailments.

There aren’t many drugs that really effectively treat migraine pain. If you’ve ever had a migraine, you know the pain all too well. First, the pain makes you sick, and then it seems like the after pains of the episode can last for days. The most popular drugs used to treat migraine pain comes with a host of nasty side effects.

Apparently, new research has proven that it can effectively treat migraines, maybe even faster and better than prescription medication.works by blocking pain-producing chemicals called thromboxanes.

Aspirin has anti-inflammatory properties and can be more effective in treating pain. In fact, the research found it was more effective than Tylenol [a drug that does not contain any anti-inflammatory properties]. Not many medicines can tackle the pain of a migraine, but experts claim, aspirin can.

One of the most common reasons to take an aspirin is to avoid a heart attack. How aspirin works is it thins your blood which reduces blood clots, and can prevent a heart attack.

Doctors typically recommend adults start taking an aspirin a day at the age of 50 to protect you against a heart attack and stroke. Recent studies have hinted that aspirin could help reduce blood pressure as well as reduce the likelihood of a second stroke.

Scientists recently turned to aspirin for help in battling cancer, Daily Mail reports. It’s not fully understood yet; experts believe that aspirin may prevent platelets from protecting cancer cells in the body.

A recent study found that if you take an aspirin a day for ten years, it can cut your cancer risk. The research showed that not much cancer protection happens for the first five years of taking an aspirin a day, but after the five-year mark to the ten years, aspirin can protect you from a variety of cancers.

“It takes five years but the benefits are quite striking. A low dose of 75 mg of aspirin is something to consider for people in this age group, apart from those with bleeding risks. What’s needed is a change in mindset to recognise the benefits of aspirin in combating cancer. If you put all this together, then aspirin is the second most important thing in preventing cancer.”

Aspirin was found to be useful for women who were at high risk for a miscarriage. Many women have disorders such as Hughes syndrome, which causes them prone to clotting and make them prone to recurring pregnancy loss.

The typical treatment for recurring miscarriages is a daily dose of aspirin and blood-thinning heparin. Another reason for pregnancy loss is high blood pressure, Taking just one aspirin a day can reduce your blood pressure, and reduce your risk of losing the baby by a quarter.

The consumption of an aspirin a day doesn’t come without risk, either. Aspirin can cause internal bleeding, loss of eyesight, and life-threatening strokes. If you have Crohn’s disease, aspirin can be dangerous.

Before beginning an aspirin regime or any other medicine, please consult your doctor beforehand. Only your personal physician knows your history, and whether the medication is right for your condition.

Are you surprised that aspirin may be able to prevent you from cancer? Have you ever taken it for a migraine or other intense pain?

Adzenys XR-ODT: New Chewable ADHD Medication For Children Sparks Worry

Adzenys XR-ODT™ is a chewable version of the ADHD medication pictured, amphetamine salts.

Adzenys XR-ODT™ (extended-release, orally disintegrating tablet) is a new form of central nervous system (CNS) stimulant prescription medication for treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. The extended-release dissolvable tablets share their active ingredient, amphetamine, with well-known ADHD medications such as Adderall®. As a matter of fact, the drug has demonstrated bioequivalence to Adderall XR®, an extended-release mix of amphetamine salts and one of the most commonly prescribed ADHD medications in the United States.

Adzenys XR-ODT™ was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through the 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway back in January, and was released last week. The FDA has not approved the drug for children under the age of six. The new tablets are being marketed as children’s chewables, and have a fruity flavor. One of the obvious benefits of Adzenys XR-ODT™ over Adderall XR® is due to the fact that many children — and some adults — have great and genuine difficulty swallowing pills.

Adzenys XR-ODT™ has sparked worry among parents and psychiatrists, which is understandable, as many of us were told during our childhoods that medicine is not candy, and parents are often warned away from depicting medicine as candy in any way, shape, or form — even the famed Flintstones vitamins can cause controversy, depending on a parental or medical viewpoint. It’s worth pointing this out and thus recognizing the kneejerk reaction that this will cause before considering the pros and cons of this new ADHD medication.

Adzenys XR-ODT™, which comes in six dosage strengths ranging from 3.1 milligrams to 18.8 milligrams, has also resulted in consternation due to the seemingly flippant marketing tone that has surrounded this ADHD medication during the past week. The pharmaceutical company behind this drug is called Neos Therapeutics and is based in Dallas, Texas. The CEO of Neos Therapeutics, Vipin Garg, seemed to make a stunningly inappropriate and tone-deaf pun using the word “speed” — street lingo for illegally sold and abused amphetamine and methamphetamine — when commenting to the press about the release of Adzenys XR-ODT™. He stated that Neos Therapeutics has been stepping up their marketing efforts in order to get “ahead of back-to-school season,” and added, “We’re launching now at full speed,” according to medical blog STAT. Could that really have been unintentional?

Vipin Garg also spoke about the new ADHD medication as if it is part of a back-to-school sale at a department store.

“We look forward to offering patients, their parents and caregivers with [sic] this new treatment option ahead of the back-to-school season this summer, and expanding our focus into newly diagnosed pediatric patients and adolescent and adult patients. Keeping patient cost at a reasonable level to ensure access is an important consideration. We’re offering a coupon in which patients can receive a 30-day free trial of Adzenys XR-ODT, as well as a program of up to one year in which patients pay as little as $25 per prescription. […] For Cotempla XR-ODT, we are on-track to complete the bridging study in the third quarter of this year to demonstrate bioequivalence between clinical trial material and the to-be-marketed drug product, including an assessment of food effect. […] If approved, we believe we will have the only two extended-release orally disintegrating tablets for the two most commonly prescribed drugs for ADHD on the market by the 2017 back-to-school season.”

STAT spoke to two doctors who expressed their concerns about Adzenys XR-ODT™ and its introduction to the American market. Stimulants that are currently on the market are known for their abuse by teenagers and college students, some of whom use them as party drugs and some of whom use them for performance enhancement and to reduce the need for sleep while studying. With this in mind, Dr. Mukund Gnanadesikan, a child and adolescent psychiatrist in Napa, California, told STAT that he fears a flavored, chewable ADHD medication will be “a recipe for people to request it and then sell it.”

“I’m not a big fan of controlled substances that come in forms that can be easily abused — and certainly a chewable drug falls into that category.”

Dr. Alexander Papp, an adult psychiatrist affiliated with University of California, San Diego, also expressed disapproval. “An orally disintegrating amphetamine for kids by the morally disintegrating FDA,” he told STAT. “What’s next? Gummy bears?”

The medicine-as-candy concern dovetails with the concern among Americans about the overmedication of children who are diagnosed with ADHD, a concern that dates back to the 1990s when the popular prescription was Ritalin®. STAT biotech reporter Meghana Keshavan writes that 75 percent of children with an ADHD diagnosis are on medication.

“There’s a very real population of children and adults whose lives are vastly improved by medications like Adderall® and Ritalin®, which stimulate the central nervous system and affect chemicals in the brain associated with impulse control. But the line between need and want is increasingly blurry.”

Dr. Greg Mattingly, a child psychiatrist who teaches pharmacology at the Washington University School of Medicine, says that he approves of the prescription of Adzenys XR-ODT™ for children who have trouble swallowing pills, and has already had success with a 9-year-old male patient of his with this exact problem.

Dr. Ben Biermann, an assistant professor of psychiatry at University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, reminded STAT readers that Adzenys XR-ODT™ is just a new form of an existing ADHD medication, therefore it should not be a cause for overreaction.

“There’s nothing revolutionary about this drug. It’s simply another delivery mechanism for a medication that already exists and has widespread use.”

Adzenys XR-ODT™ is the first and only extended-release orally disintegrating tablet (XR-ODT) for the treatment of ADHD. It is available in the United States by prescription only. STAT reports that “analysts are generally bullish about [Neos Therapeutics’s] prospects.”

What do you think about Adzenys XR-ODT™? Is it appropriate for children? Will it increase risk of abuse?

Katdashians is Exactly as Absurd as it Sounds

Just when you thought the Kardashian empire couldn't spread any further, a New York City based theater duo is preparing to expose the famous family in a completely new way.

Katdashians The Musical may sound insane, but as we know, nothing is off-limits for Kim & Co., and we can thank Bob and Tobly McSmith for bringing the Kardashians to the masses in all their singing and dancing glory.

The McSmith's are behind other NYC parody musicals such as Saved by The Bell and and Full House, and Katdashians, which combines the musical Cats, the Kardashians, and actual cats, is their newest addition to the Manhattan musical theater scene.

"Cats the musical has no plot, the Kardashians have no plot, so they lend themselves to each other," Tobly McSmith told Refinery29. "Our musical is a plotless grand showing of all of them."

Throughout the show, audience members are encouraged to keep their phones out to Snapchat, Instagram, and, of course, take selfies. Even the performers themselves with keep their phones with them, and they weave through the audience during the inevitable "Selfie Song" to take photos that they'll later post to social media.

The show runs from May 31-June 3 at Theatre80 on St. Marks Place, and from June 16-July 17 at the Elektra Theater in Times Square. There's no word yet on whether or not the show will have a run at the new Dubai Opera House, but here's to hoping.

Now, only one question remains: Will Kris Jenner make her 10%?

Cancer Linked To Cellphones? New Government Study Yields Disturbing Results

Cancer-cellphone study

A large government study intended to help decide whether cell phones cause cancer has yielded some pretty disturbing results and also has reignited debate about whether cell phones cause adverse health effects in humans, the Wall Street Journal reports. The report on the study, which was conducted on rats and mice, has not been completed yet, but partial findings were released Friday.

The findings have been reviewed in depth by the U.S. government and represent a significant advance in the long controversy over how cell phones affect the health of users. Researchers at the National Toxicology Program (NTP) exposed male rats to two type of frequencies emitted by mobile phones. After this RF radiation exposure, they found the rats were significantly more likely than unexposed rats to develop a type of brain cancer called a glioma, and also had a higher chance of developing the rare, malignant form of tumor known as a schwannoma of the heart. The effect was not seen in females, Mother Jones reports. The study was conducted with more than 2,500 rats who were exposed to radiation for two years.

According to Scientific American, the rodents were placed in specially built chambers that dosed their whole bodies with varying amounts and types of this radiation for approximately nine hours per day throughout their short life spans.

“This is by far—far and away—the most carefully done cell phone bioassay, a biological assessment. This is a classic study that is done for trying to understand cancers in humans,” says Christopher Portier, a retired associate director of the NTP who helped launch and commissioned the study. “There will have to be a lot of work after this to assess if it causes problems in humans, but the fact that you can do it in rats will be a big issue. It actually has me concerned, and I’m an expert.”

The study is one of the largest conducted analysis on the relationship between mobile phones and cancer, in which the U.S. government has invested $25 million. According to Time magazine, the study was reviewed by experts at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the authors say more research on the link will emerge in the next couple years. As Time notes, a study in rats is never directly translational to humans. It does, however, give researchers evidence that can lead to further research on the impact cell-phone radiation has on people.

Ron Melnick, a former researcher at the National Toxicology Program which reviewed the results, told the Wall Street Journal that he thinks people will now stop saying that there is no risk of getting cancer via cellphone.

“Where people were saying there’s no risk, I think this ends that kind of statement,” he was quoted as saying.

The scientific community has been divided on this issue since it was raised for the first time in the early 1990s. Many previous studies had suggested a link between cancer and mobile phone use, but were criticized for the methodology or having small sample sizes that were not allowed to be extrapolated.

The results from the recent study suggest that significant exposure of certain types of radiation from mobile phones to male rats give them a higher risk of developing brain and heart cancer. What the study does not show is whether humans are at risk for developing cancer from using cell phones, or whether using a headset or keeping the device away from the head and body could make a difference.

The Associated Press wrote that some of the analysts themselves in the study had trouble accepting the results because of the odd factors, such as rats in the group that weren’t exposed didn’t contract what would be the normal number of brain tumors for that population.

“I am unable to accept the authors’ conclusions,” said Dr. Michael Lauer, deputy director of NIH’s office of extramural research. “I suspect that this experiment is substantially underpowered and that the few positive results found reflect false positive findings.”

Deadly Superbug Resistant To Antibiotics Found In U.S.

Antibiotic-resistant superbug found in the U.S.

A potentially deadly superbug has been found in the U.S for the first time ever. In April, a Pennsylvania woman was diagnosed with a very rare form of E. coli that has shown to be resistant to many antibiotics, including the catchall-drug Colistin.

Referencing a report by the U.S. Department of Defense, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Tom Frieden, talked about the unusual case while speaking at the National Press Club on Thursday.

While visiting a clinic in Pennsylvania, a urine sample was collected from a 49-year-old woman. The sample was sent to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for further analysis.

The center found bacteria known to be resistant to antibiotics in the sample. Researchers became particularly alarmed as the source of the rare superbug could not be immediately determined.

Fearing a spread of the infection, the CDC and the Pennsylvania Department of Health quickly became involved in the investigation to identify anyone the woman may have come into contact with. They also looked into any other potential cases at the clinic she visited.

Dr. Alex Kallen, a medical officer with the CDC, said the woman was treated and released. However, this is the first time this specific strain of E. coli, known as CRE, was found in a person in the U.S.

While the patient indicated she had not traveled out of the U.S. within the past five months, doctors in Europe, Canada, and China have found similar superbug infections. The U.S. Department of Agriculture found one case of antibiotic-resistant E. coli in a sample of pig intestine. The agency is still trying to evaluate exactly what farm the pig came from and if any other animals could be infected.

Since the antibiotic-resistant superbug was first identified in China last year, microbiologists have been anticipating its appearance in the U.S. and have been diligently watching both the food supply as well as humans for any indication of its presence. Tests of the bacteria have revealed a gene known as mrc-1 that is very resistant to drugs like Colistin.

“This is definitely alarming,” said David Hyun, a senior officer leading an antibiotic-resistance project at the Pew Charitable Trust. “The fact that we found it in the United States confirms our suspicions and adds urgency to actions we need to work on antibiotic stewardship and surveillance for this type of resistance.”

The CDC views these cases as a warning, not necessarily a disaster. However, their primary concern is the traits of this rare E. coli could transfer to other bacteria, making infections very difficult to treat. Once mutated, these new antibiotic-resistant superbug infections could kill nearly 50 percent of the patients who get sick.

While this is the first deadly superbug case found in the U.S., Frieden said expect to see more in the near future. A critic of doctors’ overuse of antibiotic prescriptions, he is urging scientists to develop new drugs as soon as possible to combat potential outbreaks.

“The medicine cabinet is empty for some patients,” Frieden said. “It is the end of the road unless we act urgently.”

Researchers are unsure if the Pennsylvania case of antibiotic-resistant E. coli is related to the swine case, but doubt they are linked. Yet, the CDC and the USDA believe the two cases are of great concern to U.S. public health. During his speech, Frieden called the new strain a “nightmare bacteria.”

In the U.S., almost two million people become ill from a bacterial infection that is highly resistant to antibiotics and 23,000 died as a result. Not long ago, the World Health Organization stated antibiotic-resistant superbugs are a tremendous threat to global health.
