Tech Insider was the first to report that Power Plant Fitness, America’s first gym specifically geared towards marijuana users, will come to San Francisco this fall, and the co-owners behind the project expect the opening to start a wave which will place weed culture more squarely in the category of wellness activities not just in San Francisco, but throughout the nation.
Some may hear about San Francisco’s weed-based gym and immediately think of a stoner haven full of saunas, couches, and maybe a few barbells. However, Jim McAlpine, a “cannabis entrepreneur” who has already founded the tremendously successful 420 games (which are similar to a weed-fueled Olympics) in San Francisco, says in a blog post that Power Plant Fitness will definitely not be a stereotypical drug den.
“It won’t be a place to get high and just screw around. We are focused on the athletic side, not the cannabis side.”
“Marijuana, if you use it in a responsible way, accentuates the parts of sports that you love and helps you to do them better,” McAlpine added.
This point is debatable, the Tech Insider piece points out. As many people who have smoked marijuana can testify, its use can lead to dehydration and other side effects that would not seem to mix well with working out.
On the other hand, noted several scientific sources cited by Brit+Co, smoking weed has some effects that are very positive in terms of health.
Harvard professor Murray Mittleman elaborated on this fact in an interview he gave to TIME Magazine back in 2013.
“Current users of marijuana appeared to have better carbohydrate metabolism than nonusers,” Mittleman said.
“Their fasting insulin levels were lower, and they appeared to be less resistant to the insulin produced by their body to maintain a normal blood-sugar level.”
A more recent study by The American Journal of Medicine shows that pot smokers boasted smaller waist lines, on average, than those that do not touch the stuff.
Weed is not only good for keeping slim, either; lots of top-tier athletes, including Olympic runners, have added weed to their regimens in order to perform better.
“When I get high, I train smarter and focus on form,” says Colorado gym owner Clifford Drusinsky.
“Marijuana relaxes me and allows me to go into a controlled, meditational place.”
So McAlpine’s claims do have a solid basis, even though they might be a bit controversial when put into practice (especially when involving first-time weed users) in the San Francisco institution.
Exactly how the gym will function is still hazy, but McAlpine has revealed a few ideas.
The trainers working at the San Francisco gym will specialize not only in workout tips, but also in the study of cannabis. They will be able to give each of the gym’s new members a comprehensive “cannabis performance assessment” to help determine what strand of weed and which method of marijuana consumption will give that person the optimal workout high, and San Francisco’s thriving weed culture will make it easy to get ahold of exactly what they need.
“We will be helping our members figure out how is best for them to ingest their cannabis,” McAlpine said.
He added that, even though San Francisco is an extremely forgiving city in terms of marijuana control, smoking marijuana inside San Francisco buildings, just like smoking cigarettes, is and likely always will be strictly forbidden. Because of this, Power Plant Fitness will allow only vaping and marijuana edibles inside, and they will have a smoking porch outside for those that want to roll up while enjoying the wonderful San Francisco weather.
McAlpine also says in a press release that he and his San Francisco-based colleagues will be developing their own line of edibles designed to foster pre-workout focus and post-workout muscle recovery.
What with the exponentially increasing acceptance of marijuana in America (and especially in San Francisco) combined with the solid amount of evidence supporting weed smoking’s fitness validity, it seems like McAlpine could really be onto something.
Could San Francisco’s Power Plant Fitness be the next step in Marijuana’s initiation into the world of health science?
