‘DuckTales’ Returning To TV In 2017 On Disney XD

It is unclear whether the new DuckTales will be animated digitally or not.

Disney announced today that it will be reviving DuckTales, debuting a new series in 2017 set to star Scrooge McDuck and his grandnephews alongside “Unca” Donald Duck.

A variety of classic DuckTales characters, virtually the whole cast, are set to return in the new series, according to Mashable , while Scrooge McDuck and his grandnephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie will once again lead the series. Pilot Launchpad McQuack and inventor Gyro Gearloose will appear in the new DuckTales, along with Duckworth, Flintheart Glomgold, Mrs. Beakley, and Webbigail Vanderquack. Even the Beagle Boys and Magica DeSpell will be returning to TV as part of the new series.

Marc Buhaj, who is Senior Vice President, Programming and General Manager, for Disney XD, noted the impact that DuckTales has had on Disney.

DuckTales has a special place in Disney’s TV animation history, it drew its inspiration from Disney Legend Carl Barks’ comic books and through its storytelling and artistic showmanship, set an enduring standard for animated entertainment that connects with both kids and adults,” he said. “Our new series will bring that same energy and adventurous spirit to a new generation.”

Originally airing from 1987 to 1990 and lasting for 100 episodes, DuckTales featured as part of the daily syndicated Disney Afternoon cartoon block. Its relaunch isn’t entirely a surprise; as the Inquisitr previously reported, Disney released a video game, DuckTales Remastered, in 2013. Since then, rumors have persisted that Disney would be pursuing a revived series. More recently, Scrooge’s lucky dime, as well as the iconic Money Bin, have appeared in the Disney Infinity universe, further stoking speculation.

Several questions about the revamped DuckTales remain unanswered, however. While the original run was animated by hand, it is unclear if the new DuckTales will be digitally created or not. Veteran voice actors Alan Young, June Foray, Tony Anselmo and Russi Taylor, among others, gave life to the original characters, the Huffington Post notes, and Disney officials were unwilling to say whether they would be recruited for the revamped series.

Last year, Disney released a live action version of the DuckTales opening credits as part of it’s “90s Week” celebration. Created by a team at Oh My Disney, the video featured recreations of the iconic cartoon scenes using live ducks. It also paid tribute to the series, which paved the way for other Disney TV properties of the 90s, including Tailspin and Darkwing Duck, which was itself a spinoff of DuckTales.
