Hope Solo revealed in a recent interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America that she was the victim of domestic abuse, after she was struck over the head by a family member at an event and suffered concussion.
After she got into a US soccer van in January with her husband, who was caught driving under the influence, she admitted she was “stupid” to have entered the vehicle, which resulted in her getting banned from soccer for 30 days.
The media widely reported the Hope Solo family brawl at a party in Washington state last summer, where Hope had a fight with her half sister and nephew.
During her interview on Wednesday, Hope Solo spoke about the incident, claiming she was the victim, as her nephew allegedly hit her hard over the head during the row.
As Solo said to Roberts, It’s still very difficult for me to talk about. I’m not going to go into all the details. I was a victim of domestic violence, at the hands of my 17-year-old nephew, who is 6 foot 9 inches and 280 pounds. He struck me over the head and I was concussed pretty severely. It was a very scary night.”
According to the Washington Post, despite that side of the story, Hope’s half-sister and nephew claim that she started it and that it wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t been so aggressive.
Talking about the incident with her drunk husband, Solo admitted she was foolish to enter the van, “Well, clearly, I wasn’t thinking. I think I just wasn’t in a good place, emotionally, to even make good decisions. I mean, it’s not an excuse but I just, it was stupid. I should’ve called a taxi.”
Following her suspension Hope Solo released a statement, admitting that it had been time for her to take a break and regain her strength, “I think it’s best for me to take a break, decompress from the stress of the last several months, and come back mentally and physically ready to positively contribute to the team,” she said at the time.
