According to Google AdWords, interest in melatonin, a sleep hormone sold in supplement format, is growing. In March 2016, more than 685,000 searches for melatonin came into Google’s search engine. In May 2015, only 449,000 or more searches for melatonin came into Google. What’s the reason for the upsurge in searches for melatonin? It could be due to recent reports that praise melatonin for not only helping some folks experience deeper REM sleep, but also due to claims that melatonin can help grow muscles and cure GERD and eczema.
As reported by CBS, promising new research from a study that used melatonin to combat eczema in children gave hope to kids suffering from eczema. It was discovered that children with eczema had lower levels of the sleep hormone melatonin. Children who had problems sleeping weren’t just awake due to the scratching from eczema, but researches noted their reduced melatonin levels — and believed that low melatonin could be related to their skin conditions.
As such, a group of 50 kids ranging in age 2 up to 18 years of age received doses of melatonin or sugar pill placebos, to see how the melatonin would affect their eczema. Not only did the kids who got the melatonin go off to dreamland 21 minutes sooner than the kids who didn’t get the melatonin, but the melatonin also helped their eczema get better.
While some experts say melatonin is safe — even for young children as young as 12 months old — others warn that since they aren’t sure exactly what’s inside some melatonin supplements, caution should be used. There are theories about how melatonin might affect a child’s long-term hormonal development.
Meanwhile, sites like Muscle & Performance report the positive effects that melatonin can have on muscle growth, which is a new twist for those who primarily seek out melatonin to take at night when they are ready for restful, REM-type of deep sleep.
A big portion of the people searching for information about melatonin on Google add terms that indicate they want to know if melatonin supplements are safe to give children, and any side effects of melatonin. While some melatonin supplements come with the warning to only take the melatonin pills for a period of no longer than two weeks, some consumers throw caution to the wind and take their melatonin supplements for years on end.
Across the Internet, reports of melatonin producing side effects like a slight nauseated feeling, and morning sleepiness are outweighed by those who report the intense dreams that melatonin can provide. While some report nightmares, others simply report deeper sleep, which means they recall their dreams better — good, bad or indifferent.
More good news about melatonin, as reported by the Seattle Times, includes the fact that melatonin can potentially heal the body — with the dissolvable or chewable over the counter supplements helping not only children with melatonin’s potential anti-inflammatory effects, but adults who suffer from GERD. It may take as long as 30 days for melatonin to kick in and combat GERD, and the publication reports that melatonin can even be taken with Prilosec.
The long-term effects of taking melatonin aren’t clear, but melatonin could help with weight loss, reports Psychology Today. The publication notes that stimulating your body to make its own melatonin can help with weight loss by making a special kind of energy-burning fat more prevalent.
“New research indicates that the sleep hormone melatonin may encourage weight loss, by increasing the presence of a particular kind of fat that actually helps burn energy. This may sound surprising, that the presence of fat in the body leads to weight-loss inducing fat burning.”
