George Harrison is still bringing good into the world, nearly thirteen years after his death. This month, through his music and legacy he will be helping out the musician assistance organization Sweet Relief. The proceeds of a Harrison tribute concert on September 28 will go to the charity, which helps out career musicians during times of illness, disability or age-related issues.
The tribute concert, titled George Fest: A Night to Celebrate the Music of George Harrison, will be held in the El Rey Theatre, according to Rolling Stone. The publication lists notables such as Norah Jones and Brian Wilson as well as members of such well-known bands as Heart, The Flaming Lips, The Cult, The Strokes and Velvet Revolver as set to appear. Even ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, who recently released a new tune about grammar usage, is said to be on the bill.
The concert will happen mere days after the release of a new Harrison box set. Guitar World says the digital remasters of Harrison’s first six solo albums will be released individually and as a collection entitled “The Apple Years 1968-75.” The box set includes a book with an introduction by Harrison’s son Dhani, who will also appear at the tribute in L.A.
Dhani expressed his pleasure at the new release, which serves as a complement to the last Harrison collection, The Dark Horse Years, that was released 10 years ago:
“I am so happy what we started a decade ago by releasing The Dark Horse Years is now complete with the release of his first six albums as The Apple Years. Some of these records have long been out of print, and so I cannot wait for music lovers to get their hands on these newly remastered versions. It’s a very proud moment for us, and I would like to thank everyone who has helped us in any way to achieve this.”
According to Sweet Relief’s site, the charity was founded in 1994 and assists musicians facing hardship due to cancer, psychological conditions, kidney and liver disease and a wide range of other conditions. Funds go towards medical expenses, necessities such as food and housing costs and other basic expenses. Grants range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per recipient.
Harrison was often referred to as “The Quiet Beatle,” as his Biography.com profile indicates. He also had a telling influence on the band’s music, in particular his interest in Indian instruments such as the sitar.
