Each month we’re gifted with hell on earth in the form of bloating, blemishes, and serious cramps. And, while popping a few ibuprofen usually does the trick, Swiss chocolatier Marc Widmer has come up with a tastier solution to ease the pain.
Chocolate With Love created a magical chocolate bar called Frauenmond, which means “woman’s moon” in German, made with a blend of 17 Swiss mountain herbs. According to the Daily Mail, Widmer’s aim was to “Make the menstruation days of women more comfortable.”

Kidspot reports that the herb-chocolate combination alleviates menstrual pain by lifting the body’s serotonin levels, ultimately having a “soothing and harmonizing effect” on cramps.
In addition to incorporating hand-picked herbs in his recipe, Widmer claims that his product – which retails for AUD $16 – could have a “positive effect and promote overall well-being.”
While it’s highly unlikely doctors will begin prescribing chocolate for pain – chocolate is definitely medicine in my book – it does serve another purpose. According to Refinery 29, there’s actually a medical reason as to why we become snack-o-holics whenever Aunt Flo makes her monthly visit.
Our bodies are constantly experiencing hormonal and chemical shifts, especially within the first couple of weeks leading up to our period. One of these fluctuations is in the neurotransmitter serotonin – your mood trigger.
According to a recent study conducted by Annals of Endocrinology, women consume more carbohydrates (chocolate, candy, chips, and other sweets) during the two weeks preceding their menstrual cycle.
So, even if this magical bar of chocolaty goodness isn’t persuasive enough to kick ibuprofen to the curb, there’s still hope that it will lift your mood – so that’s pretty awesome.
In other news, Foria Relief is finally available. Foria announced the rollout of their latest product, Foria Relief – a suppository that can be inserted into the vagina or rectum – this January. The product, made from cocoa butter, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and cannabidiol, is intended to alleviate menstrual cramps and lower back pain.
“We know that cannabis does help pain. We do see a lot of patients with dysmenorrhea [painful menstrual periods],” Dr. Morton Barke, a retired gynecologist and medical director of a medical marijuana evaluation center in California, told Racked earlier this January. “It’s a fantastic modality to help patients.”
Because the cannabis is directly reaching the bloodstream, instead of being smoked or ingested, its pain-relieving powers are especially potent.
Nylon writer Gabrielle Korn reviewed Foria Relief earlier this April, detailing her first experience trying out the cannabis tampons.
“It took about forty-five minutes of laying in the fetal position before I realized that my suffering had gradually subsided,” Korn wrote. “I sat up, in wonderment. Instead of stabbing pain, I felt a weird sense of tranquility, like my uterus had done some deep breathing exercises.”
In addition to Korn, women everywhere have praised Foria Relief, claiming that it made them feel “serene.”
According to the Foria website, each Foria Relief pact contains four suppositories, with a single serving containing 60 mg of THC and 10 mg of CBD.

“Foria Relief has been carefully crafted using a delivery system intended to maximize the muscle relaxing and pain relieving properties of cannabis without inducing a psychotropic ‘high,'” the website continues. “Cannabis has a long, cross cultural history of use as a natural aide in easing symptoms associated with menstruation. Our intention is to share the powerful medicinal properties of this plant while utilizing modern extraction techniques to standardize purity and potency, thereby ensuring a safe and accessible experience for all women.”
The bad news? It’s extremely hard to get. For now, Foria Relief is only available in two states – Colorado and California – and only to state residents who obtain a medical marijuana card or doctor’s note.
