Pendulum wave machine…made with bowling balls

You have probably seen a pendulum wave machine in motion before, whether in school or online. Here’s a popular demonstration of the classic experiment…

As the folks at Harvard Natural Science describe it

[U]ncoupled simple pendulums of monotonically increasing lengths dance together to produce visual traveling waves, standing waves, beating, and random motion.

It is at once scientifically as well as hypnotically fascinating. And it becomes even more so when the scale is increased to the point that pendulums are swinging bowling balls…

This demonstration is on private land in North Carolina and isn’t available to the public…so if you want to see this in real life, you’ll have to build your own.
