Black Widow.
Ever since her first appearance in Iron Man 2, Marvel fans and critics have eagerly anticipated the day when Scarlett Johansson’s “Black Widow” would get her own solo film.
At the Marvel event held on Tuesday at the El Capitan Theatre, there were a lot of announcements made – including a host of movies that will compete directly against DC Comics over the next five years as well as the casting of Chadwick Boseman as “Black Panther.”
Think about all of the new characters that are being introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their own solo films already scheduled – including Ant-Man, Black Panther, a female Captain Marvel. However, one of the names that you did not see on that list was Black Widow.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had the chance to come clean about why Black Widow has been getting the cold shoulder when it comes to standalone, solo films.
According to his statement, Feige claims that Black Widow “couldn’t be more important as an Avenger herself.”
“Frankly, it’s about bringing new characters to the screen. Black Widow couldn’t be more important as an Avenger herself.”
Based on Feige’s explanation, Marvel fans and critics should not look at it as Black Widow getting the cold shoulder. On the contrary, Feige confirms that her pivotal role within the Avengers movies (including the two-part Infinity finale announced on Tuesday) is going to become “very, very big.”
“Her part in Avengers: Age of Ultron is very, very big and further develops and further enhances her character. The plans we have for her throughout the rest of the Avengers saga is very, very big. A lynchpin, in fact, to those films.”
Kevin Feige went on to explain that the main focus of Marvel studios with the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this time is to continue “the forward momentum and continuity” instead of “taking [Black Widow] out” or “doing a prequel.”
“Instead of taking her out, instead of doing a prequel, which we haven’t done yet, we’re continuing the forward momentum and continuity of the cinematic universe of which Widow is a key, key part.”
Black Widow is not the only one of the Avengers that will not be receiving a solo film at any time in the foreseeable future. Feige also stated that the Hulk is also on that relatively short list. Marvel would rather have him “appearing with his friends” in the Avengers movies.
What do you think about Feige’s explanation? Does it make sense or is it just an excuse for not giving Black Widow a solo film?
