Chinese Photographers Sneak Into Morgue to Photograph Singer

Yao Beina, a singer from China, recently passed away from breast cancer at age 33. Following her death, three reporters from Shenzhen Evening News dressed as doctor's assistants snuck in to photograph Yao Beina during postmortem surgery to remove her corneas for donation.

After the family complained, the newspaper said it deleted the images. However the journalists complained that their "press freedom" was being restricted. The censorship incident is even being compared to the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris.

In an attempt to remedy the situation, the paper printed her photo on the front page announcing a fund set up in her name to help people with eye disease. Beina's company threatened legal action as it was an unapproved project. Another paper, Global Times, says the reporters have been forgiven by Beina's father.

Yao Beina is known for singing the Mandarin version of "Let it Go" for Disney's Frozen as well as appearing on The Voice of China. She had was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and had a mastectomy as well as chemotherapy. The cancer returned in 2014, spreading to her lungs and brain. She passed away on January 16, 2015.
