After spending about seven years in development limbo and having different names attached to the cast and crew (including David Fincher, Tom Hooper, Ben Whishaw, etc.) Queen manager Jim Beach announced this past Friday that Sasha Baron Cohen would be producing, writing, directing and starring in the upcoming Freddie Merucry biopic.
Beach, who has been with the band for almost 40 years now, made those statements while receiving the Peter Grant award for Outstanding Achievement.
Sasha Baron Cohen was one of the first actors bound to play Freddie Mercury, but he dropped out of the project because his vision clashed with Brian May and Roger Taylor's (guitarist and drummer of Queen, respectively) idea of the film. According to sources, May and Taylor wanted the biopic to be PG-rated and Cohen disagreed, leaning towards a R-rated take on Mercury's life. Ben Whishaw was attached to the movie after Sasha Baron Cohen left.
The film does not have a tentative release date yet (or much info at all, tbh. Except that they're probably not even bothering with Freddie's childhood in Zanzibar and teenage years in Mumbai, smh).

Thoughts on the movie? Should they try and find a Parsi actor? Queen post? Do you like Freddie Mercury's Barcelona? What would John Deacon think?
