A mega-mansion once owned by country music legend Kenny Rogers recently sold for $46 million, topping the list of the most expensive real estate sold in Los Angeles last week. The magnificently decorated home is impressive, but the panic room and a state-of-the-art security system inside the 23,000 square feet mansion make it intriguing.
“The Gambler” obviously wanted to make sure his riches were well-protected, with four-double high gates, 32 security cameras, and a panic room on the property. According to Mental Floss, panic rooms are often built to shelter homeowners in case of a burglary, or simply to keep their prized possessions out of site.
Take one look at the video (below) of the stunning mansion that Rogers’ purchased back in the ’70s and it’s easy to see why security on the estate was so important.
If you’re curious about what the panic room looks like, it does not appear in the pictures posted by the property’s listing agent, Hilton & Hyland — or maybe it’s just too hard to tell where the door to the secret room is. The entryway to most panic rooms typically blend in with the surroundings.
According to Trulia, only a small percentage of real estate listings even mention that a home has a panic room. After all, a buyer wouldn’t want anyone to know the location of the room — it’s supposed to be a secret! Most realtors don’t give the information out until after a buyer signs the deal.
Kenny Rogers, now 76, purchased the home in 1979 and lived in it for a number of years. According to the Daily Mail, the 23,000 square foot home is “roughly one third the area of the White House.”
Sold to an unknown buyer, the mansion was sold with all of its belongings, inside and out. Some of the items sold with the mansion include furniture, artwork, linens, and two massive lion sculptures that sit outside the entry gate. It is not known if the contents of the panic room were included in the sale.
According to Hyland and Hilton, when Rogers purchased the mansion in 1979, he named it Liongate Estate. His Zodiac sign is the Leo, hence the name and the two lion sculptures featured at the entrance.
The estate grew in size over the years, and now features a glass elevator that opens to a swimming pool; a spectacular ballroom for entertaining; a billiards room with a marble bar; a movie room; and a gourmet kitchen. In case you’re wondering if there’s room to sleep and shower, there are 11 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms inside the property, including a 3,000 square foot master suite.
Take a look at the Kenny Rogers’ former mansion in the video above. Where do you think the panic room is? Hidden in the library walls or could it be in the paneled walls of the ballroom?
