New Documentary Claims That The Church Of Scientology Feared Nicole Kidman And Broke Up Her Marriage To Tom Cruise

New documentary claims that the Church of Scientology intentionally broke up Cruise and Kiidman's marriage.

This past Monday the creators of the documentary, Going Clear: Scientology And The Prison Of Belief sat down and held a panel discussion. The controversial film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and the creators talked about their belief that the Church of Scientology destroyed Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise’s marriage.

The panel discussion was held by the New York Times and was moderated by Logan Hill. The panel consisted of Lawrence Wright, the writer of the book that the documentary is based on, filmmaker Paul Haggis, the documentary’s director Alex Gibney and Mike Rinder a former member of the church, reports the Daily Mail.

In Going Clear, Marty Rathbun, who at one time was the second highest-ranking official in the Church of Scientology, states in the film that he had been appointed to ‘facilitate the breakup’ between Cruise and Kidman because the church leaders were ‘suspicious’ of Kidman.

‘David Miscavige [leader of the Church of Scientology] was terrified that he was losing control of Tom Cruise, because Tom Cruise is the greatest rainmaker really, for Scientology,’ Gibney stated.

Gibney added that Scientology opposed psychiatry and that Kidman’s father was a psychologist.

“Miscavige was afraid that Nicole Kidman was slowly taking Tom away from the church. There was a concerted effort to get him back. One of the things they did was… at Tom’s behest, Marty Rathbun testifies in the film, that David Miscavige requested Marty to go and tap Nicole Kidman’s phone,” Gibney added.

Cruise denies the wiretapping claims.

“Tom Cruise did not hire any private investigator to spy on or investigate Nicole Kidman in any way. Nor did he ask the Church of Scientology to do that. Any statement to the contrary is provably false,” Cruise’s attorney said in a statement.

From 1991 to 2001 Kidman, who was raised a Catholic, managed to convince Cruise that he should distance himself from the church. The film states that while Cruise was filming Eyes Wide Shut that he did not return Miscavige’s phone calls. The film also suggests that it was at this time an ‘aggressive’ campaign began to split up the Hollywood super couple.

“The other, more pernicious thing that happened was that they tried to turn their two kids against Nicole, which is really the most horrifying thing. They succeeded, so much so that we have people who told us that they began to refer to their mother privately as a suppressive person… and then they were told, ‘Now listen, the way you deal with suppressive people is, don’t let on to them that you know that they’re a suppressive person. So, be nice, smile, but be aware that this person is more dangerous and damaging than anything you could possibly believe.”‘ Gibney stated.

“The circumstances surrounding that and his description of what happened, rings so true. The mind-set of Nicole isn’t really with the program so here we go back to disconnection again, except it’s got a nicer name, it doesn’t exactly get presented that way to Tom Cruise. It’s “Tom, she’s not good for you, you better straighten out here and get your life in order and we’ll help you,”‘ he continued. ‘That dictatorial control and efforts to control people’s lives is really the ebb and flow of the Church of Scientology… There are all sorts of examples like that,” said Rinder who was at one time a high ranking member.

During the panel discussion Wright called out both Tom Cruise and John Travolta asking them to speak out about claims of abuse within the church, reports US Weekly .

“The reason we are calling out Cruise and Travolta is they have the capacity, the power, to change it. There are only two ways that you can address the abuses that are going on in Scientology. One is to re-examine the tax exemption. But some of those celebrity megaphones, if they were turned around in the other direction they could make a difference. They should make a difference. I’d like to see Tom Cruise stand up and say it’s time for David Miscavige to answer his accusers,” Wright stated.

The controversial documentary is scheduled to debut on HBO on March 29.
