Playing Tennis May Help Contribute To A Longer Life, Study Shows

A Tennis Racket And Ball Are Seen On A Tennis Court

Undoubtedly, most have probably heard that getting regular exercise and fresh air can provide a major boost to one’s overall health, well-being, and happiness. According to a new study, there may be more perks to being involved in specific type of “racquet sports,” such as tennis, badminton, and squash, than originally thought.

The study was conducted by a team of European and Australian researchers. It was recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, where the researchers’ findings can be read in full.

In the study’s abstract, the authors describe how data regarding how being involved in a certain sport might relate to a person’s long-term health has been rare up to this point. This aim of the study was to provide more data in this particular field. Specifically, the study attempted to look at the relationship between involvement in certain sports and “all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality.” According to Zosia Chustecka of Medscape, CVD has long been the leading cause of death in the United States, but cancer is quickly catching up.

The researchers in the study looked at participation in six different sports or recreational activities. The sports that were studied were cycling, aerobics, running and/or jogging, football and/or rugby, swimming, and racquet sports.

The researchers looked at 11 studies from either the Health Survey for England or the Scottish Health Survey, all of which took place between the years of 1994 and 2008. Over 80,000 British or Scottish men and women were studied.

The participants, each of whom were over the age of 30, were asked a set of questions regarding their routines, including if their workout was enough to make them “sweaty” or “out of breath.” They were also asked questions regarding the frequency and duration of their participation in the aforementioned sports or activities.

The participants were tracked for approximately nine years. It is explained in the study that there were 8,790 deaths that occurred among the group that was studied. A total of 1,909 deaths were due to CVD.

Ultimately, the study ultimately found that involvement in the racquet sports proved to be the most beneficial. According to the study, participating in racquet sports, such as tennis, was linked to a 47 percent reduced risk of death of any cause. Furthermore, involvement in the racquet sports was shown to reduce risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 56 percent.

The research revealed that swimming, aerobics, and cycling have benefits in this area as well. According to the study, swimming revealed a 28 percent reduced risk of death due to any cause, and a 41 percent reduced risk of death due to cardiovascular disease. Involvement in aerobics cut risk of death from any cause by 27 percent and cardiovascular disease by 36 percent. Cycling reduced all-cause mortality by 15 percent, but did not show evidence of reducing risk of death from CVD.

Quite surprisingly, the study did not reveal the same benefits for jogging or running. It is also explained in the study that participation in football or rugby did not show significant reduction in reduced mortality risk for all-causes or CVD either.

It is explained, however, that the study is not without its flaws and limits. In an article written by Nicole Lyn Pesce on The New York Daily News, Dr. Pekka Oja of the UKK Institute in Finland, a main contributor to the study, further explained the surprising results of the sports such as running.

“”The likely reason for them not showing reduced mortality in the fully adjusted analysis was that the participants in these sports were younger than their controls and the participants in the other sports to begin with, and we would need another 5-10 years to follow them in order to find the actual mortality rate.”

Pesce’s article further explains that the study is “observational,” and it does not prove a cause and effect relationship. However, the study itself concludes with the researchers saying that their findings should bolster “the existing body of knowledge” relating to how participation in sports is thought to have excellent ability in promoting “public health.”

The authors also state that future studies should be “well-designed” to help fortify evidence on the relationship between sports and reduced risk of mortality and if there is really a causal relationship. If the benefits are found to be real, the researchers further state that finding new ways to increase sports participation should be looked at as well.

Though more research still needs to be done, it is certainly exciting to hear that something as simple as heading to the tennis court on a regular basis could potentially have such an impact.

How Kim Kardashian Is Taking Care of Kanye Amid His Hospitalization

Kim Kardashian has been taking care of husband Kanye West since his hospitalization for exhaustion. The reality TV star has been "helping to feed him and lying by his side," and according to a source, "She knew he couldn't keep going the way he was." Kim, who shares daughter North and son Saint with the rapper, even spent Thanksgiving with him at the hospital, "keeping a very close watch on him and not letting people disturb him."

Kanye was admitted to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on Nov. 21 after an incident at his personal trainer's home. He was reportedly acting "erratically" and was placed in a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold. Though the "Fade" singer went on a number of rants during his Saint Pablo concerts - and ultimately canceled the remaining 21 tour dates - it is being reported that Kim's terrifying Paris robbery back in October is the catalyst for Kanye's breakdown; according to a source, the attack "triggered everything": "It did a number on him as much as Kim," the insider said, adding, "The mere thought that anything could happen to her sent him in a tailspin. He wasn't sleeping and he was having nightmares about it." They went on: "Kim is his family and the only family he really has now. They took him in and embraced him. So seeing Kim traumatized did a major number on him."

The Unfortunate Reason Drake Didn't Show Up to His Abu Dhabi Gig

On Saturday night many people showed up to VIP Room's pop-up venue at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, especially to see their special guest performer Drake, but apparently it was too many people. Despite clubbers buying expensive tables at the gig (taking place inside the usual venue for Cipriani restaurant on Yas Island) the rapper failed to show, and the reason is pretty unfortunate.

The PR for the club confirmed to POPSUGAR Middle East that the Canadian star was just too popular and his security team decided the appearance was not safe, as too many people were at the venue. According to the Daily Mirror newspaper, guests waited until 5am but he never made it to the stage.

I was lucky enough to bump into him the night before as he took the elevator up to the same venue where Luciano and Paris Hilton were performing, presumably to enjoy a meal in the restaurant. A few of us trying to get upstairs were ordered to wait so Drake – surrounded by about 7-10 people – could go ahead without being bothered.

While waiting for the elevator to arrive the most hassle he got from us was a "Hi, Drake" to which he responded with a nod in our direction. It was a all a rather calm experience! Although I, nor one of the organizers of the whole thing made it into the venue on Saturday due to fussy security, I did hear from people inside that it was pretty unorganized, with people constantly being moved from table to table.

I enjoy Drake's music and have seen him live in the UAE before (last year) but I really feel bad for his biggest fans who traveled all the way to the capital city to see him. It's not exactly clear who's to blame (Drake? His entourage? The venue?) but if it's true he was paid up to $309,863 in advance to be there, the operation definitely could've been slicker.

Thankfully, he did show the following night to carry out the commitments he had to host the closing Formula One bash but I'm not sure it means people who spent a lot of money on Saturday's arrangements were grateful. For now, those planning on attending his appearance at BOA Dubai had better hope everyone's learned from this experience! Check out the pictures in our gallery.

3D-Printed Organs May Become Reality Soon As Australian Hospital Prepares First ‘Biofabrication’ Center

A Three-Dimensional (3-D) Image Displays A Computerised Visualization Of A Human Heart.

Organs and tissues fabricated by 3-D printers could become a reality sooner than expected if a medical facility and university in Brisbane, Australia, have anything to say about it.

The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is building a center dedicated specifically to “biofabrication” at the Herston Health Precinct, according to an article by Engadget‘s Steve Dent.

The new center will provide a “space where doctors and researchers can develop tech to model and print cartilage, bone and other human tissue,” Dent explains.

When the center opens it will indeed be one of a kind, breaking new ground the field.

“It will be the first time a biomanufacturing institute will be co-located with a high-level hospital,” Australian Minister of Health Cameron Dick told the Brisbane Times in an article quoted by Dent. “Researchers, scientists, nurses and doctors will all be working together to deliver the best outcome for patients. Our vision for healthcare is that the biofabrication institute will pave the way for 3D printers to sit in operating theatres, ready to print tissue as needed, in our hospitals of the future.”

The new two-floor center will “image, model, and manufacture 3D patient-specific tissues under the one roof,” Amy Mitchell-Whittington writes in the Brisbane Times piece.

“The institute would have a wide range of capabilities across the two floors, including tissue engineering, clinical scanning and visualisation, 3D modelling and manufacturing, educational spaces and innovation hubs,” Mitchell-Whittington adds.

Organs and tissues fabricated by 3D printers provide amazing opportunities for the the future of transplant patients. Patients’ bodies often reject tissue introduced from donors. However, printed organs and tissues would be generated based off cells from the patient’s own body, which will naturally eliminate the rejection hurdle.

Some of the replacement tissues being produced by 3D printers now actually dissolve and are reabsorbed into the body.

“A lot of the implants we are developing, we can implant into a patient and as the tissue grows back, it is not rejected, the scaffold will resorb over time and the tissue will grow even more and eventually the implant is gone,” Associate Professor Mia Woodruff of the QUT Biofabrication and Tissue Morphology Group told the Brisbane Times. “We don’t always have to use metallic implants any more, we can develop really high-spec composite materials that dissolve as the tissue heals.”

The technology is not currently advanced enough for printing entire organs and is limited to the production of simpler biological structures like bones and cartilage, Dent explains.

However, the work that will be going on at the new biomanufacturing center at QUT, along with cutting-edge research at Harvard, Wake Forrest, and other institutions, should bring doctors and scientists much closer to being able to produce entire organs.

“We are not going to be able to 3D print an organ tomorrow but what we are able to do is bring together the researchers, the clinicians, the patients, the engineers, the intellect and industry partners to be able for us to develop new technology to the level where it can be translated into the clinic,” Woodruff said. “This is where you are able to create these artificial organs in the future.”

In addition to eliminating the issue of tissue rejection, 3D-printed organs and tissue will also offer hope to those on long organ-donor waiting lists.

“Organ transplant lists are endless at the moment and we want to be able to help these people,” Woodruff said.

The number of lives that could be saved by printing organs and tissues rather than having to wait for a donor could be truly astronomical.

The center is expected to attract a considerable amount of donations and other funding to propel its research.

“This institute, opening in 2017, will catapult Queensland onto the global stage as a leader in medical innovation and technology that will change the face of healthcare,”Minister Dick added. “We anticipate that within the next five years, this institute will be attracting $10-15 million in investment each year.”

Facebook Friends Help You Live A Longer Life, Study Says

Here’s a reason to start accepting more friend requests on Facebook — a new study has found that people who accept more Facebook friends tend to live longer lives, The New York Times reports.

While many people have condemned social media for its effects on our health and behavior, a paper published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggests that those who have a large number of friends on Facebook tend to get the same health benefits as those who have lots of friends offline.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, used data provided by Facebook for the paper, which was approved by three university and state review boards. In total, they analyzed 12 million social media profiles that Facebook made available, matching them up with records from the California Department of Health.

All of the Facebook users were born from 1945 to 1989. The researchers preserved the members’ privacy by aggregating the data before analyzing it, they say.

The study found that members with average or large number of Facebook friends lived longer than those who had very small numbers of Facebook friends. It was “a finding consistent with classic studies of offline relationships and longevity,” a spokeswoman at the University of California said in a news release.

The research confirms what scientists have known for a long time about the offline world: People who have stronger social networks live longer.

Researchers found that “moderate use” of Facebook was associated with the lowest mortality rate, and that receiving friend requests was associated with longer lives. Interestingly, sending friend requests was not associated with benefits.

“The results show that receiving requests to connect as friends online is associated with reduced mortality but initiating friendships is not,” the researchers wrote in the paper.

The researchers also found that certain behaviors on Facebook were more linked to longer lives, such as posting photos. Members who mainly used Facebook to send messages were not found to receive any health benefits.

Additionally, online behaviors that indicate face-to-face social activity (like posting photos) are associated with reduced mortality, but online-only behaviors (like sending messages) have a nonlinear relationship, where moderate use is associated with the lowest mortality.

One of the authors of the paper, professor of public health and political science James Fowler, said that he was surprised that requesting friends was not associated with a longer life span.

“I had hoped we would find that reaching out to others was associated with better health,” he said.

Fowler said that the results suggested that researchers who had previously found that people with more friends were healthier might have misunderstood the relationship between social connections and health. He cautioned that “the reason why people with more friends are healthier is because healthier people have more friends,” meaning that “it may be harder than we thought it was to use social networks to make people healthier.”

Despite the positive correlation between Facebook friends and longer lives, the researchers cautioned against jumping to any conclusions or altering behavior in light of the study.

The authors also acknowledged the study’s limitations, including the fact that the findings represent a correlative relationship and not necessarily a causal one.

“At this point, we’re not making any recommendations on how people should use social media,” fellow author William Hobbs said. “It’s good to have a long track record of finding these relationships again and again before we start giving recommendations.”

Hobbs also cautioned that people had extremely high levels of Facebook interactions with friends and no offline friends, they actually suffered worse health.

“Most Facebook users engaged in moderate levels of online interactions,” he said. “However, when numbers of online interactions were extreme, and when we didn’t see evidence of users being to connected to people offline, we saw associations with worse health.”

Kate and Pippa Middleton Prove That a Tiara Won't Come Between Their Sisterly Bond

Kate Middleton's top-secret squad may be extensive, but there's no question as to who the leader is: her younger sister, Pippa. Many of us were first introduced to the 33-year-old event planner at Kate and Will's royal wedding in 2011; Pippa made headlines for her stunning appearance, and it wasn't long before the public took interest in her and Kate's sweet relationship. And in the most considerate of sisterly moves, Kate doesn't want her royal status to take away any shine from Pippa's own wedding to financier James Matthews. Kate has reportedly opted out as a member of her wedding party because she doesn't want to "upstage her sister" by being her royal maid of honor. Veteran royals author Judy Wade added, "Kate would want to be in the background as much as possible." How thoughtful is that? Scroll through to see Kate and Pippa's cutest moments over the years.

Aspartame To Blame! Diet Soda Really Might Cause Weight Gain, Researcher Says

Does aspartame cause weight gain?

Aspartame, the sugar substitute used in some diet sodas, is often consumed by people trying to lose weight, but new research suggests as many skeptics have before, that aspartame might actually cause people to gain weight. Previous research has indicated that even at acceptable daily intake amounts, as regulated by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), might make people feel hungrier and eat more. Now, a team of researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital have disclosed their findings as to why aspartame does not promote weight loss. The research was published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism. The team claims that one of aspartame’s metabolites might be the culprit. The researcher team was led by Dr. Richard Hodin of from the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Surgery.

A breakdown product of aspartame is phenylalanine. It inhibits a gut enzyme called intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP). This enzyme has been shown to prevent metabolic syndrome in rodents, according to Medical News Today. Metabolic syndrome is a group of symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. Inquisitr reported earlier this year that diet soda consumption might increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Now, researchers say that diet soda might even cause weight gain.

Dr. Hodin and team already had shown that IAP can prevent the onset of metabolic syndrome. Based on that earlier research, the team hypothesized that consuming aspartame might promote metabolic syndrome and cause weight gain. The research was conducted on mice by adding aspartame to diet and regular soda, and then measuring IAP activity in the rodents. They used four groups of mice. Two of the groups were put on a normal diet, but one group received drinking water with aspartame and the other group was given just plain water. The other two groups of mice were put on high-fat diets. Again, one group received drinking water with aspartame and the other group was given just plain water. The groups that were put on a normal diet were consuming the equivalent of three and one-half cans of diet soda for humans every day and the rodents that were on the high-fat diets were consuming aspartame equivalent of almost two cans of diet soda for humans every day. The mice were then monitored for 18 weeks.

“Sugar substitutes like aspartame are designed to promote weight loss and decrease the incidence of metabolic syndrome, but a number of clinical and epidemiologic studies have suggested that these products don’t work very well and may actually make things worse,” Dr. Hodin said. “We found that aspartame blocks a gut enzyme called intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) that we previously showed can prevent obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome; so we think that aspartame might not work because, even as it is substituting for sugar, it blocks the beneficial aspects of IAP.”

The press release said that in the researchers’ findings “clearly show that aspartame blocks IAP activity, independent of other effects.”

“At the end of the study period, while there was little difference between the weights of the two groups fed a normal diet, mice on a high-fat diet that received aspartame gained more weight than did those on the same diet that received plain water. Aspartame-receiving mice in both diet groups had higher blood sugar levels than did those fed the same diets without aspartame, which indicates glucose intolerance, and both aspartame-receiving groups had higher levels of the inflammatory protein TNF-alpha in their blood, which suggests the kind of systemic inflammation associated with metabolic syndrome.”

The study concluded that endogenous IAP’s protective effects in preventing metabolic syndrome might be inhibited by the suspected metabolite of aspartame, but Dr. Hodin went as far as to call aspartame counterproductive to weight loss diets.

In October, Inquisitr reported that a leaked email from a former head of the FDA indicated that American politician and businessman Donald Rumsfeld has a lot to answer for due to his part in the approval of Nutrasweet, the controversial artificial sweetener made from aspartame.

U.S. Government Has Paid Out More Than $25 Million So Far This Year For SIRVA, Long-Term Shoulder Injuries From Flu Vaccines

U.S. Government Has Paid Out More Than $25 Million So Far This Year For Severe Flu Vaccine Shoulder Injuries

The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program has paid out over $25 million in damages to victims of serious shoulder injuries related to vaccine administration in the United States so far this year, according to WSOC-TV.

Over 220 people have been compensated so far in 2016 for SIRVA — shoulder injury related to vaccine administration — a painful and debilitating side effect that sometimes comes after vaccination.

Dr. Tom Shimabukuro of the CDC says that the condition is rare. These injuries occur when vaccines are not given in the proper part of the shoulder. Vaccines should be given in the thick portion of the deltoid muscle, he says, not higher up near the shoulder.

Shimabukuro says that some pain is normal with any vaccine, but it is much more extreme and long lasting for those who experience SIRVA.

What I’m talking about here is pain and weakness and loss of function that far exceeds and lasts longer than we would normally expect.

Wired explains that when a vaccine is injected too high on the arm, the needle goes into the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that protects the tendons of the shoulder, instead of into the arm muscle. Since vaccines contain ingredients designed to provoke the immune system, these ingredients inadvertently provoke the immune system to attack the bursa when this happens, leading to severe pain and a lack of mobility.

Medscape describes a typical case history of a 55-year-old woman who sought medical care after three months of pain in her left shoulder after receiving a flu vaccine and a tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccination. They say that her history and symptomatology were usual for a patient with SIRVA — an absence of prior shoulder dysfunction, a rapid onset of pain, and limited range of motion.

She described her pain as dull/achy, 5 out of 10 (10-point scale with 10 being the worst pain) at rest, and exacerbating with shoulder manipulation, most notably with abduction. In addition, she reported persistent 3–4/10 dull pain at rest, sleep disturbances due to pain, and difficulty with lifting, carrying and driving.

After an ineffective corticosteroid injection and several more months, her pain lessened but it was still noticeable and she still had restricted motion in that arm.

Medscape notes that SIRVA can be not just painful and debilitating, but also expensive to treat.

An uncomplicated flu shot is often free of charge; however, our patient’s initial “free” flu shot resulted in more than $18,000 of healthcare charges, not including the follow-up MRI and office appointments with her orthopedic surgeon. Fortunately, our patient has insurance and had to only pay about 20% of the cost out-of-pocket, unlike thousands of uninsured Americans receiving yearly vaccinations at local pharmacies and clinics nationwide.

Steroids and physical therapy can help SIRVA patients recover, but some patients have permanent injuries from the vaccines.

The number of SIRVA injuries has been rising in recent years. Some experts believe that this is caused in part by the rise in vaccinations being offered in locations like pharmacies where those who administer the vaccines may not have proper training on where to insert the vaccines.

SIRVA is covered under the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, a $3.6 billion fund that protects vaccine makers and those who give the shots from lawsuits. The federal program is funded by patients, who pay a 75-cent tax that is added on to the price of every vaccine given.

Victims of vaccine injuries are unable to sue vaccine manufacturers or the companies that administer the vaccines under federal law. The United States government ruled that the blanket protection from lawsuits was necessary to keep the vaccine makers in business.

Skin Patch: New Device Collects Sweat To Monitor Health [Video]

People Are Seen Running On Indoor Treadmills In New York

According to a new report, researchers have developed and now tested a new skin patch that collects sweat and can help monitor health. While a sweat-monitoring skin patch may sound like it is something out of the future, it appears to be very real.

The new research was published on the journal of Science Translational Medicine, where it can be read in full. The study describes how “wearable technology” is becoming a widespread tool among those who are interested in keeping tabs on certain aspects of their health and wellness (heart rate, calories, etc). The skin patch is described as a “flexible microfluidic device” that can be applied to the skin very easily.

The study also talks about how the skin patch is new technology in this field, going beyond anything that is currently out there. As Sarah Fecht of Popular Science explains, the devices that are currently available can’t do what the new skin patch may be able to.

“Current fitness trackers can tell you how many steps you’ve taken or whether you’ve met your target heart rate. But a new sweat monitor in development could keep track of whether you need to hydrate and replenish your electrolytes.”

Although it may certainly seem a bit complicated at first, a new YouTube video helps to explain the skin patch a bit better. In the video, John A. Rogers of Northwestern University, the lead author of the study, breaks down exactly how the sweat-monitoring skin patch actually works.

Rogers begins by talking about why sweat is interesting and important. He explains its easily accessibility, commenting on how it can be gathered “non-invasively.” He also discusses how it has “a lot of important biomarkers” that can tell us much about a person’s health. Rogers further discusses how the goal of his team was to create something that was “thin” and “skin-like” for the purposes of catching sweat and performing analysis of these biomarkers.

According to Rogers, the device, which has four circular spots that are able to change colors, provides for an ability to capture sweat and measure “sweat loss” as well as “sweat rate.” When wearing the device, sweat funnels into a set of small tubes and then into the circular spots. With the help of a smartphone, the skin patch can determine elements such as a person’s “glucose level,” pH, and “lactate concentration” during that particular workout session.

Writing for Northwestern University NewsCenter, Megan Fellman, Science and Engineering Editor at Northwestern University, explained that the “low-cost device” is only a bit bigger than the size of a quarter. Fellman further explains that the patch, which is to be placed on the skin of the back or forearm, is only meant for “one-time use.”

Fellman’s article further explains that the device was recently tested on two different groups of bicyclers in order to test and study its effectiveness. One of the groups being studied did their cycling inside an indoor fitness center. The other category participated in the recent El Tour de Tuscan, which is a long-distance race.

The new skin patch could certainly create interesting opportunities in the future as well. Fellman brings up the possibility of using it in “disease diagnosis.” Jessica Berman of Voice of America discusses how although the groundbreaking skin-patch is currently geared towards athletes, the scope of its usage could very easily be broadened in the near future.

“The first-of-its-kind patch is aimed primarily at athletes, but the flexible electronics device will in all likelihood find a place in medicine and even the cosmetics industry.”

The original study on Science Translational Medicine described how the patch could also be used in military training. It further described how the patch might be able to be used to test other bodily fluids such as saliva and tears down the road as well.

Surprise, Surprise: Justin Timberlake Regrets That Double-Denim Moment With Britney Spears

We all remember when then-couple Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears showed up to the American Music Awards in 2001 wearing head-to-toe denim, and it sounds like Justin hasn't stopped thinking about it, either.

While promoting Trolls in Australia this week, Justin stopped by the talk show The Project and was asked, "What have you learned about the industry that you didn't know when you were in *NSYNC that you know now?" After a beat, he replied, "If you wear denim on denim, it will get documented. You know what, I don't think I could even bring that back." About the look (which he and Britney wore 15 years ago but somehow seems like just yesterday), Justin added, "I'm going to go out on a limb and say if it's worn properly, denim on denim could be [brought back]." When asked who he thinks could pull the look off now, he quipped, "Not Donald Trump."

Meghan Markle Writes an Incredibly Inspiring Essay About the Harsh Realities of Fame

Suits actress Meghan Markle might be getting plenty of attention these days thanks to her high profile romance with Prince Harry, but she's way more than just royal arm candy. She recently wrote an incredibly moving and inspiring essay for Elle detailing the careful, tricky balance of maintaining both her Hollywood career and her philanthropic endeavors, as well as why she takes being a public female figure so seriously. She starts off by noting how she's writing the essay from a trailer on the set of Suits with her mother by her side, and why she once turned down a glitzy appearance at the BAFTAs to spend more time at the Gihembe refugee camp in Rwanda.

"My brain, heart and spirit couldn't shift gears that quickly, from the purpose-driven work I had been doing all week in Rwanda to the polished glamour of an awards show. 'No,' my heart said. And it wasn't a soft whisper; it was a lion's roar," she wrote. "I looked out the car window and saw a world of verdant beauty that had been riddled with genocide and unrest only 22 years ago, but had recovered with a decisive choice to overcome. The rolling fields, the goats and thump-thump of the ground as we drove – to me, it was bucolic bliss. It was love at its core. And in that moment, my gut said no because while my two worlds can coexist, I've learned that being able to keep a foot in both is a delicate balance. No, they are not mutually exclusive but guiding my heart through the swinging pendulum from Hollywood fantasy to third-world reality is challenging in its own way."

Meghan also reflects on how her parents - her mother, "a free-spirited clinical therapist," and her father, a television lighting director - raised her to be a global citizen, which opened her eyes to some harsh realities. "My parents came from little so they made a choice to give a lot: buying turkeys for homeless shelters at Thanksgiving, delivering meals to people in hospices, giving spare change to those asking for it," she continued. "It's what I grew up seeing, so it's what I grew up being: a young adult with a social consciousness to do what I could and speak up when I knew something was wrong." She goes on to reveal how childhood experiences shaped her into the feminist she is today, which led to the opportunity for her to give a speech on International Women's Day with UN Women. "[The speech was] a testament to the fighting spirit I had as a girl, and the responsibility I now feel as a woman and as an actress. The moment Suits became successful and I realized people (especially young girls) were listening to what I had to say, I knew I needed to be saying something of value."

Kanye West Reportedly Hospitalized After Canceling Remaining Saint Pablo Tour Dates

Update:

Original post:
After canceling the remaining 21 dates of his Saint Pablo tour, Variety reported that Kanye was hospitalized in LA. The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call of a "disturbance" around 1:20 p.m. on Monday, and once authorities discovered a "medical emergency," Kanye was transferred to a hospital by paramedics.

Kanye West made headlines earlier this month after he went on a pro-Trump rant during his San Jose, CA, concert. Not long after, he slammed pals Beyoncé and Jay Z during his show in Sacramento, CA, saying he was "hurt" and asking Jay Z to call him.

Drake Workouts to Taylor Swift's 'Bad Blood' in New Apple Music Ad

A few months ago, Taylor Swift starred in an ad for Apple Music, in which the singer headed to the gym--even though she "hates cardio"-- to run to her #GymFlow playlist.

It's only with Drake's 'Jumpman' that she can get through her run--that is, until she's so distracted by the music that she falls off the treadmill.

In Apple Music's newest ad, it's Drake's turn to workout, and he makes the surprising choice of lifting heavy weights to Swift's 'Bad Blood.' The one-minute long video, titled 'Drake vs. Bench Press,' features the artist struggling to lift heavy weights because his music selection is "distractingly good."

Prostate Cancer Second Opinions: Alternate Advice Might Not Force Treatment Change

Prostate Cancer Second Opinions: Alternate Advice Might Not Force Treatment Change

Prostate cancer patients seeking second opinions shouldn’t always expect a change in treatment. That’s the revelation of a recent study on the disease and what’s in it for patients looking or advice from alternate sources aside from their usual doctor.

According to a report on the study from DotMed, cancer organizations in general are largely in favor of second opinions. This is in order for patients to have a clear understanding of their disease, and to be educated about their treatment options. As cancer management options may run the gamut from surgery to active surveillance to radiation therapy, the researchers believe this as the reason why support organizations believe it’s a worthwhile decision to get a second opinion.

Aside from analyzing the impact of second opinions, the study, which was led by Johns Hopkins University researcher Dr. Archana Radhakrishnan, looked at the reasons why patients with prostate cancer may want a second opinion from another doctor. And based on the researchers’ findings, patients suffering from a localized form of the disease generally sought additional opinions regardless whether they needed a change in treatment or weren’t satisfied with the quality of cancer care.

Furthermore, the study found that second opinions were irrelevant in relation to treatment regimens for men classified as low-risk.

From 2012 through 2014, the researchers looked at close to 2,400 men from the greater Philadelphia area suffering from localized prostate cancer. Second opinions were sought by approximately 40 percent of the subjects, and out of these men, close to 51 percent said they did so to get more information about their disease. About 46 percent said that they wanted the “best doctor” possible to be treating them for their condition.

The researchers concluded that second opinions had no associative link to the perceived quality of care or a desire to get definitive treatment.

“Men who sought second opinions because they were dissatisfied with their initial urologist were less likely to receive definitive treatment, and men who wanted more information about treatment were less likely to report excellent quality of cancer care compared with men who did not receive a second opinion.”

When it comes to curing prostate cancer, patients have multiple options. According to a blog post from Medical Daily, not all these options may be appropriate for every patient, and active surveillance may be the best tool to use for “many” men who suffer from the disease. But in the end, each option has its share of advantages and disadvantages.

“Taken as a whole, there is no difference in the likelihood of cure whether one has surgery or radiation therapy. If one method of treatment were clearly superior, it would make life easy. We as physicians would just tell everyone to have that treatment. Since cure rates are equivalent, however, men have to consider their options and decide which treatment they want.”

Indeed, it can be quite difficult to choose the best form of treatment for prostate cancer, second opinions or none. The DotMed report cited a separate, randomized study led by Dr. Freddie Hamdy of the University of Oxford, where the researchers discovered that mortality rates for the disease were “low irrespective of the treatment assigned,” with no marked differences among the different options patients have. The study noted that death rates were close to the 1 percent range for all forms of treatment.

Dr. Mark Litwin, chair of urology at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, was not involved in either study, but had some interesting thoughts on how men with prostate cancer should go about second opinions, particularly if it is to look for a higher-end treatment regimen.

“Virtually no one had died from prostate cancer. All three groups have almost 100 percent surviving. That should give all men pause before pursuing radical treatment for low- or intermediate-risk tumors.”
