The Wrap fact checked a few plot points from season 2 of Marco Polo, spoilers obviously:
* Kaidu did oppose his cousin Kublai, in a rebellion that lasted beyond Kublai's death in 1294. Nayan did rebel against Kublai, but his reasoning was that he was a traditionalist and didn't like how Kublai adopted Chinese culture. His motivation for rebelling in history was given to Kaidu on the show, with Nayan getting religious motivation instead.
* Pope Gregory X never met with Nayan, but did have diplomatic relations with Abawa Khan, who ruled over the Persian portion of the Mongol Empire, but in Lyon, France rather than Israel. They did plan a millitary alliance, since the Muslim forces sitting between them were their common enemy. Pope Gregory X died in 1276 before any alliance actually came about.
* According to the account of Nayan’s rebellion in Marco Polo’s book, the tents of Nayan’s army sported Christian crosses — as the tents of Nayan’s Crusader army do on the show. Gregory was in Acre with the Crusaders when he was named Pope — a selection which took almost three years to make. Technically, however, he wasn’t officially Pope until he returned to Europe
* Zhao Xian (the Chinese Emperor) was purposely surrendered to the Mongols by his grandmother, the Empress Dowager Xie. Zhao Xian become a protected prisoner of the Mongols’ Yuan Dynasty, and he was even given a title. After a few years, Zhao Xian was relocated to Tibet, where he became a monk at the Sakya monastery. In his 50s, Zhao Xian may have been ordered to commit suicide by Gegeen Khan, the then-Mongol emperor of China. (The Mongol Empire had been divided by that time). However he died, Zhao Xian wasn’t murdered by Kublai Khan when he was a child, as depicted on “Marco Polo.”
