Weight Loss Surgery May Help Reverse Premature Aging In Obese Patients While Improving Quality Of Life

Weight loss is an issue that many Americans struggle with, and there may seem to be few options to losing weight for good. For those who have tried everything else and nothing seems to work, surgery may be the option. Surgery can improve the person’s life, lead to a longer and higher quality of life and even help with the treatment of certain diseases related to the excess weight.

WTHR reported that in a study conducted by Austrian researchers, preliminary evidence indicates that Bariatric patients may actually improve their lives and stop premature aging due to the surgery. Researchers compared the markers for premature aging in patients before and after the surgery.

Two years after the patients had their surgery, they had a decrease in inflammation in their cells. The experts in the study believe that large amounts of fat loss can lead to a healthier body and a more healthy state. All of the patients in the study were over the age of 40, and the study was conducted by researchers from the Medical University of Vienna in Vienna, Austria.

As previously reported in Inquistir, the FDA recently approved a device that dieters can use to lose weight. The AspireAssist device helps dieters to remove some of their stomach contents in order to help them achieve permanent weight loss. Some doctors believe that the device may be an excuse for dieters to overeat. The FDA approved the device because it is believed that the AspireAssist may be an effective option in weight loss for those who have tried everything else.

Diabetes in Control reported that weight loss surgery is not only effective in helping dieters with weight loss, it can lead to the reduction in diseases related to obesity too. Since obesity has become an epidemic and is associated with a variety of diseases, surgery may be the answer. The National Institute of Health for Obese Patients said that patients with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 35 and no more than 40 who have a medical condition, would benefit from having the surgery.

The study was conducted in order to determine whether or not weight loss would contribute to a reduction in Type 2 diabetes. The side benefit would be that it would contribute to an overall quality of life. Several other studies have indicated that weight loss has contributed to a significant reduction in Type 2 diabetes and a decrease in the mortality rate.

Yahoo News reported that in a study conducted by the European Society of Cardiology, weight loss as the result of bariatric surgery could delay the aging process. Dr Philipp Hohensinner, the lead author in the study conducted by the Medical University of Vienna in Vienna, Austria, said that obese people become prematurely old.

“They have an increased level of inflammation, with higher levels of inflammatory cytokines (small proteins important in cell signaling) in their fat tissue. Obese people also have shorter telomeres at the end of their chromosomes.”

Telomeres are the caps at the end of a each strand of DNA. They act as the internal clock on each cell. They shorten as people age, but they can also be shortened due to an unhealthy lifestyle. Study authors collected data from 76 patients before and after the weight loss surgery and also after one and two years of the surgery. What they determined was that the telomeres were 80 percent longer after the patients had the surgery.
