Is Aretha Franklin’s version of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” better than the original

Usually when an artist covers a song, it’s a tribute to an older musician, someone who came before. But sometimes the elder statesmen and women of pop music tip their hats to the new generation by singing the songs of their juniors.

In this case, we get to hear the Queen of Soul herself singing Adele’s biggest hit…

James Franco’s Lost SNL Doc Yanks Back NBC’s Comedy Curtain

James Franco Saturday Night Live documentary

James Franco was never a Saturday Night Live cast member. He instead came up in comedy through the Judd Apatow crowd, opting for movies instead of the weekend NBC mainstay. Of course, Apatow’s signature is the heart behind his simple comedies, reflected by how many of his primary actors — Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen — have gotten critical recognition for their dramatic work following their appearances in his films.

While James isn’t universally respected for all the arts he tries out, one early example of his directing work shows Franco’s talent for telling a story — this time about what has happened on Saturday nights at NBC for more than 40 years.

After James had already gained notoriety for his roles in Judd’s comedies, he went to film school at New York University. One of his early documentary projects was to follow SNL cast member Bill Hader. When Franco got clearance to follow the entire production of SNL for a week, he decided to expand he project, capturing SNL is its frantic seven-day glory. In a recent interview with Wall Street Journal, James talked about the stress that the SNL cast feeds on to churn out the show every week.

“I think that approach – the ‘All night writing sessions on Tuesday’ – it just becomes a tradition. That’s the way it’s done. I don’t understand why they don’t write on Monday and during the day on Tuesday. In my documentary, people like Will Forte, they just thrive on that. That’s the rhythm they’ve gotten into. I guess someone like Will Forte will have some of his best ideas at eight in the morning. Part of it is going through the event at night like a madman.”

It took James nearly five years to secure distribution for the project due to red tape at NBC. Though according to some early reviews, the documentary’s quality could have also been a factor in the delay. Rolling Stone complained that Franco’s novice fingerprints are all over the SNL doc.

“For all its vaunted subject matter, Saturday Night looks like what it is — the work of a first-year filmmaking student. It’s all shaky handheld camera work, some of it in grainy black and white for no apparent reason. Franco doesn’t really know when and where to edit himself, and as an interviewer, he doesn’t ask anything like tough questions; [James] is a besotted fanboy, getting to hang out on the set of the show he loves. Still, Franco’s workmanlike, fly-on-the-wall approach isn’t distractingly bad, and he manages to capture a lot of pretty cool moments [of Saturday Night Live].”

Maks Chmerkovskiy, Meryl Davis Dating? Former ‘DWTS’ Couple Still Working Together

Meryl Davis

Maks Chmerkovskiy and Meryl Davis still aren’t dating, but they do have some exciting projects in the works. In a new interview with People Magazine the reigning Dancing With The Stars champion said that he and Meryl have become “very close friends,” and that he is still close to her even though he’s got other stuff going on in his life. Maks also said that he and Meryl will be working together in the future, which is super exciting for fans of the duo.

“I was a dancing pro on the show for about a decade, and I needed the trophy to show for it. But Meryl was part of that. And while I am doing other things, Meryl is a close friend and has become very important in my life. We have new projects together,” Maks told People.

Maks Chmerkovskiy and Meryl Davis heated up the dance floor last season on DWTS and their chemistry was simply undeniable. Meryl brought something out in Maks that fans of the show never saw before, and many were convinced that these two were going to end up together. However, Maks says that he often gets himself in trouble because he “falls in lust” easily.

“I am a hopeless romantic who falls in lust and gets in trouble. I love my work and am very productive, yet I always find time to play,” Maks admitted. Of course many of the dancers on the show feel similar — it’s hard to get so close to someone and not develop some kind of feelings, especially if your partner is attractive! In fact, this season, there are already rumors about potential hookups. According to The Inquisitr, the rumors surround Maks’ brother Val Chmerkovskiy and his partner Janel Parrish. Although the actress does have a boyfriend, some people see something between her and Val… do you?

Maks Chmerkovskiy and Meryl Davis attended the Dancing With The Stars premiere show this season, and there are some rumors that the two will come back to dance together one of these Monday nights. According to Parade, there is still a chance that the two could bring back one of their winning numbers, strap on their dancing shoes, and give people what they really want!

As far as Maks’ plans to return to the show, he says that it’s a possibility.

“I still watch the show, because it is part of me and will be 50 years from now. Winning was a huge portion of a big chunk of my life. I am not sure if I will return or in what capacity. Time will tell,” said Maks. Of course he would more than likely want to judge, perhaps taking over for Len Goodman if and when he retires.
