New York Cannabis Law To Expand For Patients With Chronic Pain

New York Cannabis Law To Expand For Patients With Chronic Pain

Cannabis in New York is legal for certain health conditions, but now that law is expanding to allow for people who suffer from chronic pain to use the plant-based marijuana treatment.

In a new report from New York Daily News, cannabis will soon be expanded for more patient’s right that marks a landmark win for proponents of marijuana in the state of New York. For those who use cannabis as a treatment for major and minor ailments, the marijuana treatment has been know to expand people’s lives and also improve their quality of life.

The movement to legalize marijuana in the Untied States has grown quite rapidly over the past few years with several states decriminalizing the use of cannabis for medical reasons. There have also been a handful of states that have decriminalized the use of marijuana for recreational purposes as well, such as Colorado and Washington.

There have indeed proven to be several medicinal uses from cannabis that have taken shape over the past few years, which New York was quick to pick up on and the laws have changed accordingly, although much more slowly in other states that are deemed to be conservative, or deep red republican states.

But with the onslaught of scientific evidence and the overwhelming proof of the health benefits of cannabis, that means that most states will at some point have to relent to the medical power of marijuana as a standard in the industry to treat many major ailments, which includes chronic pain.

When state health department officials were faced with the decision to expand cannabis rights to patients with chronic pain, the evidence in favor of it was stunningly strong.

New York Health Commissioner Howard A. Zucker made a statement to that effect and conveyed why he opted in favor of the cannabis use expansion.

“After conducting a thorough review of the scientific literature, it became clear that there may be certain benefits in the use of medical marijuana by patients suffering from chronic pain,” Zucker said. “Medical marijuana is already helping thousands of patients across New York State, and adding chronic pain as a qualifying condition will help more patients and further strengthen the program.”

The existing state regulations in New York for cannabis-based treatment includes patients who suffer from cancer, HIV and AIDS, Lou Gehrig’s diesease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s diseases, epilepsy, specific spinal cord injuries and people who suffer from multiple sclerosis.

Even though those types of ailments in people are quite severe and certainly should be afforded access to cannabis-based medical treatments by doctors, proponents for the decriminalization of marijuana say that the current regulations are excessively restrictive and do not afford quality care for people who suffer from chronic pain.

Kassandra Frederique is the state director of the Drug Policy Alliance in New York and she has publicly applauded the new directive by New York state officials to expand the use of cannabis for medical purposes.

“I think patients in New York deserve to run a victory lap over this,” Frederique said in a statement obtained by New York Daily News. “I think it is fair to say that this could affect thousands of patients in New York.”

Although the expansion of the cannabis regulation has not taken effect yet, nor has it been passed, there is every indication that it will indeed be an accepted addition to the New York state policy and people with chronic pain will be added to the list of patients who have access to treatments from cannabis, or marijuana.

The current cannabis program has been in use by the people of New York since January and over 10,000 patients have benefitted from the program. That includes a list of over 7000 physicians that have prescribed cannabis based treatments for their patients.

Martin Shkreli Responds To Australian Students Who Created $2 Version Of Daraprim Pill

Martin Shkreli Responds To Australian Students Who Created $2 Version Of Daraprim Pill That Pharma Bad-Boy Had Jacked Up Price By 5000 Percent

Turing Pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli appeared upset after he heard a generic variant of Daraprim was successfully synthesized by a few Australian students in their school laboratory. Shkreli, who has earned the infamous nickname “Pharma Bro,” took to social media to chastise and criticize the efforts of the Sydney schoolboys for offering their generic alternative for roughly $2 per dose, as compared to the $750 price tag Daraprim carried until recently.

“Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli, who gained notoriety for hiking life-saving medicine Daraprim’s price by 5,000 percent and endorsed the same pricing strategy adopted by the makers of EpiPen, responded to students who managed to synthesize a generic variant very cheaply in a school laboratory.

After the news about the cheap alternatives started making the rounds of the internet, Shkreli took to Twitter to vent, and he seemed to display a mix of frustration and anger.

As expected, the students who made the life-saving medicine Daraprim in a school laboratory have accused Shkreli of being “an attention-seeking businessman.” They added that in his bid to maximize his profits, he routinely forgets there are “people’s lives and livelihoods at stake” in the row over predatory drug pricing.

Martin Shkreli has routinely been called the “poster boy for greedy drug company executives” and “the most hated man in the world,” because he jacked up prices of Daraprim, a 62-year-old anti-parasitic drug, by over 5,000 percent, reported the Sydney Morning Herald. The drug is direly needed by patients with weakened immune systems. Daraprim, the active ingredient of which is pyrimethamine, is part of a vital line of treatment in certain types of malaria as well as toxoplasmosis. While the condition is rare, it is often life-threatening. Caused by the Toxoplasma gondii parasite, toxoplasmosis often affects people who have weakened immune systems. Since HIV and AIDS virus wreak havoc on the immune system, the drug is often prescribed to these patients.

However, with no apparent consideration about the criticality of the drug, the former hedge fund manager bought Turing Pharmaceuticals last year and almost immediately increased the price of the drug from $13.50 to $750 a tablet. Incidentally, the medication is currently listed by the World Health Organization as essential, but there is no strict legislature to force Shkreli’s company to keep the price low.

Eleven students, belonging to Sydney Grammar School, claimed they wanted to prove just how exorbitant Shkreli’s pricing of the drug was. Hence, the students, between the ages of 16 and 17, attempted to recreate the drug molecule in their school laboratory under the guidance of Dr. Alice Williamson and associate professor Matthew Todd from the Open Source Malaria consortium, reported the Guardian. Interestingly, the students succeeded in recreating the drug, and it cost them $2 per pill.

Needless to say, the story became an overnight sensation. While the Australian duo was being applauded online, Shkreli posted some tweets that appear to border on dissent.

While the synthesis of a drug on a small scale, in a school laboratory, is easy, making the drug on an industrial scale, while ensuring the “highest yield, best purity, most scale,” is a different ballgame, taunted Shkreli.

Interestingly, when Shkreli was questioned about the exorbitant price rise that his company orchestrated, he maintained the strategy was meant to extract money from insurance companies to fund research for better drugs.

In an apparent response to Shkreli’s alleged altruistic intentions, one of the Australian students, James Wood, said, “I don’t believe his justification for the price hike. It seems a bit wishy-washy. He was clearly trying to justify something driven by the profit motive.”

It is quite apparent Shkreli was keenly reading all the tweets that mentioned either the boys or the generic alternative. He even chose to respond to many such congratulatory messages.

Although Martin Shkreli might appear displeased, the majority of the active ingredients of drugs sold in the open market can be synthesized in small quantities in a laboratory. However, large scale manufacturing, FDA and other approvals, huge hygienic facilities, and logistics and distribution costs a lot of money. All these factors have to be incorporated within the final pricing of the drug.

SportsArt Eco-Powr Technology And Equipment Turns Calories Into Kilowatts [Video]

Sports Art fitness lets you help the environment

Did you know you can work out and contribute to energy conservation efforts at the same time? It’s true. With SportsArt’s revolutionary line of Eco-Powr equipment, you can turn the calories burned in your workout into real kilowatts of energy. As more fitness centers utilize Eco-Powr ellipticals, cycles and more, the cumulative results are immense. According to a report by Yahoo Sports, more people prefer working out in eco-friendly environments than traditional, energy consuming settings. You may see a video about Eco-Powr equipment and how they work in the video player above.

SportsArt Vice President Ivo Grossi spoke about the survey and described how Eco-Power equipment works.

“SportsArt’s ECO-POWR cardio line turns human energy into utility grade electricity through a micro-inverter similar to the technology found in solar panels and wind turbines. When plugged into a power outlet, the equipment will convert human energy into electricity — this can produce up to 160 kilowatts of utility grade electricity per unit per hour which allows gyms to create incentive programs for their members and save money.”

According to the survey’s results, 62.4 percent of those surveyed prefer working out in an eco-friendly facility. Check the video playlist below for examples of SportsArt Eco-Powr exercise equipment in action.

The survey revealed that many people felt that working out in an environmentally friendly facility was an incentive or boon to a gym membership. Many people who care about their health also care about the state of the environment and using eco-friendly equipment makes sense. The survey also revealed that people who worked out with eco-friendly equipment that would convert into energy used to power the gym would be motivated during their workouts to expend greater energy. If consumers knew that their direct efforts would be converted to energy and in turn be used as electricity for the gym where they exercised, they would work harder.

Eco-Power ellipticals, treadmills and cycles are used in approximately 400 facilities and hotels across the nation with plans for that number to double this year. In addition to using SportsArt equipment in fitness centers and gyms, many are purchasing units for their home workouts The savings in electricity often make the equipment worth the investment. Fitness centers can use the SportsArt eco-calculator to determine how many kilowatts are being converted and how that translates into energy savings. The eco-calculator is based upon how many pieces of equipment are in the facility and how many hours per day they are used. SportsArt Vice President Ivo Grossi released a statement regarding the equipment and the benefits of using the eco-calculator.

“Gyms need to look at additional ways to motivate their members to work out – incorporating sustainable solutions such as an incentive program can be highly successful in doing so. Not only will our equipment provide gym members with discounts, but gyms will be able to save money in the long term – owners can calculate their potential savings using SportsArt’s eco-calculator.”

Eco-Powr equipment isn’t just for the elite. Everyone can use these beneficial machines and help sustain the environment, reduce the carbon footprint and choose green, eco-friendly solutions. If your current exercise facility doesn’t utilize this technology, why not speak to them? It’s possible they simply aren’t aware of the advances made and options available. If you’re interested in purchasing environmentally friendly exercise equipment for your own home use, then you’ll want to check out SportsArt and see what they have to offer. With SportsArt, users can save energy in the gym as well as at home.

What do you think about SportArt’s Eco-Powr equipment line? Are you motivated to work harder if you know your calories are converting to kilowatts and that you’re creating energy?

Playing Tennis May Help Contribute To A Longer Life, Study Shows

A Tennis Racket And Ball Are Seen On A Tennis Court

Undoubtedly, most have probably heard that getting regular exercise and fresh air can provide a major boost to one’s overall health, well-being, and happiness. According to a new study, there may be more perks to being involved in specific type of “racquet sports,” such as tennis, badminton, and squash, than originally thought.

The study was conducted by a team of European and Australian researchers. It was recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, where the researchers’ findings can be read in full.

In the study’s abstract, the authors describe how data regarding how being involved in a certain sport might relate to a person’s long-term health has been rare up to this point. This aim of the study was to provide more data in this particular field. Specifically, the study attempted to look at the relationship between involvement in certain sports and “all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality.” According to Zosia Chustecka of Medscape, CVD has long been the leading cause of death in the United States, but cancer is quickly catching up.

The researchers in the study looked at participation in six different sports or recreational activities. The sports that were studied were cycling, aerobics, running and/or jogging, football and/or rugby, swimming, and racquet sports.

The researchers looked at 11 studies from either the Health Survey for England or the Scottish Health Survey, all of which took place between the years of 1994 and 2008. Over 80,000 British or Scottish men and women were studied.

The participants, each of whom were over the age of 30, were asked a set of questions regarding their routines, including if their workout was enough to make them “sweaty” or “out of breath.” They were also asked questions regarding the frequency and duration of their participation in the aforementioned sports or activities.

The participants were tracked for approximately nine years. It is explained in the study that there were 8,790 deaths that occurred among the group that was studied. A total of 1,909 deaths were due to CVD.

Ultimately, the study ultimately found that involvement in the racquet sports proved to be the most beneficial. According to the study, participating in racquet sports, such as tennis, was linked to a 47 percent reduced risk of death of any cause. Furthermore, involvement in the racquet sports was shown to reduce risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 56 percent.

The research revealed that swimming, aerobics, and cycling have benefits in this area as well. According to the study, swimming revealed a 28 percent reduced risk of death due to any cause, and a 41 percent reduced risk of death due to cardiovascular disease. Involvement in aerobics cut risk of death from any cause by 27 percent and cardiovascular disease by 36 percent. Cycling reduced all-cause mortality by 15 percent, but did not show evidence of reducing risk of death from CVD.

Quite surprisingly, the study did not reveal the same benefits for jogging or running. It is also explained in the study that participation in football or rugby did not show significant reduction in reduced mortality risk for all-causes or CVD either.

It is explained, however, that the study is not without its flaws and limits. In an article written by Nicole Lyn Pesce on The New York Daily News, Dr. Pekka Oja of the UKK Institute in Finland, a main contributor to the study, further explained the surprising results of the sports such as running.

“”The likely reason for them not showing reduced mortality in the fully adjusted analysis was that the participants in these sports were younger than their controls and the participants in the other sports to begin with, and we would need another 5-10 years to follow them in order to find the actual mortality rate.”

Pesce’s article further explains that the study is “observational,” and it does not prove a cause and effect relationship. However, the study itself concludes with the researchers saying that their findings should bolster “the existing body of knowledge” relating to how participation in sports is thought to have excellent ability in promoting “public health.”

The authors also state that future studies should be “well-designed” to help fortify evidence on the relationship between sports and reduced risk of mortality and if there is really a causal relationship. If the benefits are found to be real, the researchers further state that finding new ways to increase sports participation should be looked at as well.

Though more research still needs to be done, it is certainly exciting to hear that something as simple as heading to the tennis court on a regular basis could potentially have such an impact.
