Cellphone-Brain Cancer Link Established By Govt. Sponsored Study - Massive Multi-Year Federal Study Reveals RF Radiation Can Cause Tumors

A multi-year government study has revealed that cellphone radiation can indeed cause tumors in the brain. The Radio Frequency (RF) radiation commonly emitted by mobile phones can cause cancer after the brain is exposed to the same over a period of time.

A massive multi-year, peer-reviewed federal study appears to cement the strong suspicion that brains that are routinely exposed to RF radiation emitted by all cellphones, are susceptible to developing tumors. The study was conducted on rats, which have a remarkably similar brain structure to humans. Researchers discovered “low incidences” of at least two types of tumors in male rats exposed to type of radio frequencies commonly emitted by cellphones.

The study, costing $25 million, conducted over a period of two-and-a-half years by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), has revealed that male rats exposed to two types of RF radiation were significantly more likely than unexposed rats to develop a type of brain cancer called a glioma. Moreover, the rats that were bombarded with the radiation had significantly higher chances of developing the rare but highly malignant form of tumor known as a schwannoma. The tumor affects the heart.

The study was expensive because the team had to construct special exposure chambers that that ensured all the rats were exposed to equal amounts of RF radiation. The rats were exposed to the radiation for about nine hours per day, for periods ranging from two months to the lifetime of the animal. Interestingly, the RF radiation was 900 MHz, which is equal to the second generation of cellphone technology, commonly referred to as 2G, reported Scientific American. Incidentally, 2G is a low frequency signal that has the ability to reach a lot farther than 3G or 4G signals.

Cellphone companies and wireless product makers have traditionally maintained that such studies are inconclusive, reported Yahoo. This is because in the past, the methodologies involved intentionally inducing tumors in rats by exposing rodents to toxic chemicals and then checking if exposure to RF radiation affected them. However, this study did not do anything in advance to stimulate cancer in animals.

The intensity of the radiation was in direct relation to the incidence of cancer development in the rats. The researchers did note that the highest level of radiation was about five to seven times stronger than what humans would be exposed to while using their cellphones. But the radiation do seem to be harmful, said Chris Portier, former associate director of the NTP, who commissioned the study,

“The radiation level the rats received was not very different from what humans are exposed to when they use cell phones. The findings should be a wake-up call for the scientific establishment. “I think this is a game change. We seriously have to look at this issue again in considerable detail.”

“The NTP does the best animal bioassays in the word. Their reputation is stellar. So if they are telling us this was positive in this study, that’s a concern.”

Government agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) claim there is no evidence to link cell phone use with the risk of brain tumors. They do warn about the excessive use of cellphone, but the warnings are due to the phones’ heating effect.

The NTP study ensured that the heating effect of the radiation didn’t affect the exposed rats. The study indicates that RF radiation affects male rats little more than female rats, reported NBC News. The authors stressed that the study and the results might not translate into cancer risk for humans, however, the findings should ring alarm bells, they added,

“Given the extremely large number of people who use wireless communication devices, even a very small increase in the incidence of disease resulting from exposure to RFR resulting from those devices could have broad implications for public health.”

Ionizing radiation like gamma rays and x-rays has been widely accepted as a carcinogen. But the researchers involved in the new study noted the results “appear to support” the conclusion that RF radiation may indeed be carcinogenic.
