If you don't know his work, I suggest you start from The Taste of Cherry (winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival). Or Close-Up. Or Where is the Friend's Home?

He was also an incredible visual artist and photographer. Jean-Luc Godard once said "Film begins with DW Griffith and ends with Abbas Kiarostami."
