Chris Rock and Malaak Compton-Rock, his philanthropist wife of 19 years, are calling it quits after nearly two decades marriage, the couple confirmed.
“After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways,” said Compton-Rock in a statement on Sunday.
“Being fortunate enough to lead a life of service by working with those most vulnerable makes me well aware of life’s blessings, even when faced with difficulties.”
“While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority."
"It is in this spirit that I sincerely ask that their privacy and the privacy of our family be respected during this transition in our lives.”
Rock’s lawyer Robert S. Cohen later put out his own statement:
“Chris Rock has filed for divorce from his wife, Malaak, This is a personal matter and Chris requests privacy as he and Malaak work through this process and focus on their family.”
No other details or explanations were provided for the split.
Chris Rock and Malaak Compton-Rock, the founder of non-profit styleWorks, wed in 1996, having met two years prior. They have two daughters together.
Lola was born in 2002 and Zahra was born in 2004.
He was previously rumored to be divorcing Compton-Rock back in 2006 and 2007, and again in 2010. They later said the reports were false in a joint statement.
In this case, however, the reports are sadly true, and have made for another late addition to the list of the most unexpected celebrity break-ups of 2014 ...
