Since its release in 2012, fans have been waiting patiently for the release of the sequel to Prometheus. Though news has been spotty since that time, it appears that plans for the sequel, being referred to as Prometheus 2, are firming up.
At the end of Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott, the heroine of the film, played by Noomi Rapace, launched a spacecraft from a barren, Earth-like planet in search of the Engineers, who were portrayed as the race that seeded the Earth and led to the evolution of humans. Rapace and her human companions, who were dead by the end of the film, found out that the Engineers had planned to wipe out humanity, but were stopped around 2,000 years ago.
As she leaves the planet, Rapace’s character, Elizabeth Shaw, intends to track the Engineers down to determine why they wanted to destroy the human race. She takes the head of the android David, who helped her launch the spaceship and is still functional, with her.
Prometheus and the sequels are seen as being prequels to the Alien series of films, although this has been denied at different times. The ending of Prometheus made it clear, though, that a sequel was likely providing the film did well at the box office.
The film did indeed do well, and fans have waited since 2012 for word on the Prometheus sequel.
As reported by the Inquisitr on September 24, Scott said, “Right now, as we speak, it’s being written. I’ve had 15 drafts evolving. I definitely want to do that again because I really enjoyed doing ‘Prometheus’.”
In recent interview conducted by MTV News, Scott gave very little more insight into the story to come in the developing sequel.
In response to MTV’s question about the storyline and about expanding the role of Elizabeth Shaw and David, Scott said, “You have to. You can’t have a person go off into the galaxy and have a person who’s still got his head off. Once that head goes back on, he’s really dangerous, but he’s also very seductive. So maybe he’ll persuade her to help him put the head back.”
The tidbits offered by Scott only serve to tantalize the fan base of Prometheus as they await the sequel. Elizabeth Shaw was a strong protagonist by the end of the film, and the audience was rooting enthusiastically for her survival. Now that she is in pursuit of the Engineers, fans will be anxious to see what she will find when (or if) she reaches the home planet of the Engineers in the upcoming film. Fans will also be interested to see in future sequels when the xenomorphs from Alien make their appearance to tie the events from the Prometheus series into those of the film featuring Lt. Ripley.
It appears that the xenomorphs will not be featured in Prometheus 2, however.
Scott is quoted as having said previously, “If there was a sequel to this, which there might be if the film is successful, there’ll be two more of these before you even get to Alien 1.”
So, fans will just have to wait both to see how the events of the sequel unfold, and when the ties to the original Alien film will be made known. At this point, production of the Prometheus sequel is expected to take place in late 2015 with a 2016 release date.
