They’ve driven the mean streets of Los Angeles, drifted through Tokyo, and blazed trails across the world. So what’s the next destination for the Fast and Furious franchise? According to The Rock, it could be the Big Apple.
Dwayne Johnson told MTV News backstage at the MTV Movie Awards that it’s “possible” the next film could set its sights on New York City. But before a location is determined, The Rock and Fast star Vin Diesel agree they have to raise the bar for the next film while still maintaining the strong character development that’s been a signature of the series thus far.
“Whatever we come up with for Furious 8, we’ve gotta raise the bar in terms of action, yes, I think, but in terms of story and character.”
Regardless of where Fast and Furious 8 is set, the film will take on a decidedly different tone thanks to the untimely death of original cast member Paul Walker. Walker died in a horrific car crash in November of 2013. To help complete Fast and Furious 7, it was Paul’s younger brother, Cody Walker, who stepped in to fill his shoes.
So is Cody tapped to take his brother’s place in the next installment of the franchise? According to the New York Daily News, Cody has been bitten by the acting bug and it is a possibility.
“(His acting career) is in its beginning stages. He’s open to all types of roles,” Paul’s former manager, Matt Luber, said. “I’m not sure if they are going to make an eighth movie, but if they did, I’m sure he would entertain a conversation (about a role).”
Meanwhile, series star Vin Diesel has already begun teasing the sequel and says it was Paul’s wish to see Fast and Furious 8 come to reality.
“Paul used to say that [Fast & Furious] 8 was guaranteed and, in some ways, when you’re brother guarantees something, you have to make sure it comes to pass,” Diesel said. “So, if fate has it — fate, F8 — then you’ll get it. Furious 7 was for Paul; 8 is from Paul.'”
In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live , Diesel dropped hints confirming New York as the next destination and even hinting at a larger story to come.
“You know I always think of these films multiple pictures in advance. I think of them as trilogies. Kurt Russell came in for this movie, but he was really, we really hired him because of a story that follows this. That takes place in New York.”
With Fast and Furious 7 crossing the $1 billion mark, as reported by Inquisitr, it seems inevitable the franchise will continue speeding along.
