Making his first public appearance since quitting One Direction a few weeks back, Zayn Malik showed appreciation for his past and excitement for his future on Friday night.
The artist took to the stage at The Asian Awards (rocking a nose ring and newly shaved head) and addressed former colleagues Harry Style, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan with the following comments:
“I'd like to take this moment to thank four of the best guys I ever met while being in the band and doing all the amazing things that I did. Some of the things that we did will stay with me for the rest of my life, and I thank you for that.
"Here’s to the future!”
Malik, of course, stunned the universe on March 25, saying in a lengthy statement that he wanted to experience life away from the famous band, as a "normal 22-year old."
Rumors then quickly spread that Malik actually wanted to start a solo career... or had been fired for drug use... or is dating Ellie Goulding.
Zayn insists none of this chatter is accurate, that he simply needs to be real, but fans will likely hold a grudge against Malik for the foreseeable future.
In this case, the ex-boy band member was presented with the Outstanding Achievement in Music award in the fifth annual ceremony, thanking his parents in his acceptance speech “making me Asian."
What do you think, One Direction fans? Are you ready to forgive Zayn Malik?
