Hostess Brands, LCC has voluntarily recalled 710,000 cases of snack cakes and donuts on Friday due to a possible peanut contamination in flour used to make their products.
The peanut recall came after Grain Craft, Hostess Brands supplier, recalled their flour due to undeclared peanut residue. The peanut contamination may have been passed onto Hostess Brand products and be in their cakes and donuts. The food giant is not taking any safety chances prompting the voluntary recall.
Although the amount of contamination in the flour is small and the ‘amount of peanut exposure is considered low enough that it wouldn’t cause a reaction for most people with the allergy’, two allergic reactions have already been reported to Hostess in relation to this peanut recall according to a statement on the Hostess website.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we are recalling the specific products listed on the attachment.” Hostess said.
The company said ‘the amount of possible peanut exposure from the flour is not expected to cause severe health effects to those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts, but the products are being recalled out of caution.’
The products being recalled are sold across the United States and Mexico and include sweet baked goods including single and multi bags of cakes and donuts. The merchandise was sent to grocery stores, distributors, dollar stores, drug stores, and convenience stores nationwide before the recall was announced.
People with peanut or nut allergies who have purchased any donuts or cakes from the Hostess Brand are being urged to throw out the product or to return to the place of purchase for a full refund, according to the FDA.
The following products have been recalled and should not be consumed by anybody with a peanut allergy.
