Since the 80s, Cirque Du Soleil has been entertaining crowds across the world with their circus shows. So it's easy to see why the first two Varekai shows at the Dubai World Trade Center sold out recently. Previously in Beirut and visiting Istanbul October 5-9, here are just a few reasons why you should join the region's culture fans and soak up the show at a venue near you.
1. The tale of forest creatures features some of the most fascinating outfits you'll see on stage and the actual stage is equally as visually pleasing.
2. Two planes are charted to transport their stunning set, so you're not getting a lesser version of what the show would look like in another country if you go watch it.
3. It takes roughly 12 hours to assemble the various trapped doors and turntables etc, which isn't much time considering they've got 330 bamboo trees to put up!
4. The show has been running for 14 years and is based on the Greek myth of Icarus, a boy who wanted to fly. Oh and fly they do. You'll be awestruck watching what the performers can do in the air, presumably they do it without feeling sick from nerves too.
5. Out of 95 crew members, the 48 performers include former gymnasts and athletes, so it's absolutely jaw-dropping to see them move around and do their thing.
6. The team dons about 600 costumes so need to travel around the world with six washing machines and two tumble dryers. And we can see why; will duplicate outfits dry cleaning costs would get out of hand! Not to mention potential disasters…
7. As the world's largest theater company, worth a whopping $2billion (AED7.3billion), co-creator Guy Laliberte has come a long way since performing for cash on the streets in his native Canada.
The Dubai show runs twice a day until September 26 and you can purchase tickets at tixbox.com.
