College roommates find $40,000 in a couch…and then track down the former owner to return it

Reese Werkhoven, Cally Guasti, and Lara Russo are roommates who bought a couch from the Salvation Army for $20 together. They didn’t love it, but it fit in their apartment and it was cheap.

After getting it home, something seemed strange in the cushions, so they opened them up and were shocked to find over $40,000 in cash tucked inside…

The students also found an envelope with a name on it, the only possible link to the former owner of the couch and the money it contained. After taking some fun pictures with the cash, they tracked down the elderly woman who had stashed her life savings inside the couch before well-meaning family members donated it to the Salvation Army, unaware of the contents zipped inside.

Fortunately, the honest students didn’t walk away from the experience empty-handed, as the anonymous woman rewarded the students with $1,000 for their astonishingly kind efforts…
