With Captain America: The Winter Soldier released on Digital HD Tuesday and Blu-ray next month, it’s time to revisit the question of which side you’re on: HYDRA or SHIELD? And to make it more fun, choosing sides might end up with you winning a trip to the premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron next year.
New viral site SHIELD vs HYDRA went live Monday, inviting fans to sign up and answer a series of multiple-choice questions — amongst them, what you value most in a colleague and what area of intelligence you’re most interested in — before assigning you to one of the two secret organizations in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.
From that point on, agents for both groups will be assigned a series of weekly missions to complete over the next four weeks, with each mission acting as prelude to a weekly sweepstakes draw for prizes including autographed posters, a subscription to a Marvel comic book and flash drives (One “SHIELD” and one “HYDRA” agent will be chosen as winners each week).
After the fourth mission, the winner of the grand prize — a trip for two to the premiere of Joss Whedon’s second Avengers movie in Los Angeles next year — will be announced (That announcement should be “on or about” Sept. 22, according to Disney).
Of course, hobnobbing with Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and the other Avengers is, at best, a side benefit. The real draw here is the chance to be chosen to join a terrorist organization headed up by Robert Redford and a talking computer, let’s be honest. I mean, when it comes down to it, Hail Hydra.
Comic book superheroes often have pretty implausible origin stories: They get their superpowers from radiation, superfluid or some other sort of pseudo-science.
That’s just fine with us, however, because as Stanford postdoctoral research fellow Sebastian Alvarado reminds us, “it is fun to speculate about these things, and that’s why we have comic books, movies and science fiction.”
But that doesn’t mean that the actual science can’t be explored. Alvarado has several Stanford videos where he examines the way the Hulk and Captain America got their powers. And while the superstrength is not quite scientifically possible, it is pretty fascinating. Watch below:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier scribe Stephen McFeely has said he didn’t mind stars Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson contributing to the script.
McFeely, who wrote the screenplay with Christopher Markus, let both Chris and Scarlett chip in with dialogue in The Winter Soldier.
He added that their input helped with certain scenes as they both know their characters inside out.
Stephen told Metro: ‘The script was in pretty good shape when we started, but Chris had a lot of input on the scene where he’s meeting Sam Wilson for the first time, and what it would take to make Captain America – who probably gets stopped in the street all the time – turn around for that extra conversation.
‘And then he and Scarlett were involved in that scene in the car when they’re driving to Camp Lehigh and they’re talking about kissing and all that.
‘I think actors very often know their voices better than I do, so I have no problem with them adding a couple of lines to a scene or telling a different joke.
‘It’s only when they want to take a scene and make it about something else that it gets problematic. As long as we get what we’re trying to accomplish then I don’t care.’
He also, coyly, touched on Captain America 3, saying that both he and Christopher know the direction the film will take.
‘We’re making it now, we’re writing it now’ he said, ‘We go into production early next year for release in May. There’s not too much time for any more exploring!’
And by the way, we won’t be getting the previously rumoured ‘psychotic 1950s Cap’ storyline.
McFeely explained: ‘That was a joke!’
