Ghostbusters 3 has always been one of those projects that audiences aren’t sure they want. Sony has yet to find a director after several attempts, and there is dubious involvement of original cast members like Bill Murray. But what if the ghoul-hunting hijinks are spearheaded by something completely fresh and unique: female Ghostbusters?
According to The Wrap, Sony is looking to hire Paul Feig to battle demons in the blockbuster, which he would direct, write and produce. Feig, best known for the riotous Bridesmaids and The Heat, has proven that he can handle empowered female action-comedy.
Sources say that if he signs on, Feig would rewrite the script from scratch, even though the studio was pleased with Ethan Cohen’s previous draft.
Plot details remain uncertain, but if Sony does decide to take this approach, it would signal a breakthrough for Hollywood, in which strong female characters would crack the ceiling of a male-dominated franchise. It is not clear how many women would fill out the team, or if there would be cameos from previous cast members like Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.
Now, get your betting pools ready – who will Feig choose to fill out his cast? Emma Stone is a favorite of Sony, after starring in Zombieland, Easy A, and The Amazing Spiderman. Melissa McCarthy has a close relationship with the director, and has proven she can handle herself in both action and comedy. McCarthy also stars alongside Bill Murray in two upcoming movies, so she might be able to persuade the gregarious actor to sign on as well.
Feig has collaborated with other tantalizing actresses, like Sandra Bullock and Rose Byrne, both of whom could certainly kick some ghost ass.
Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman would likely remain on in some capacity as producers of the film, which could shoot as early as next spring.
If this actually happened (like it would), who would you want cast?
