Beck Drops Trap-Influenced Single ‘Wow’ And Sets October Release Date For New Album

Beck Hansen

Multi-instrumentalist Beck has released a new single titled “Wow,” and it’s fresh off his forthcoming as-yet-titled album that’s set for release this fall. The track was co-produced by Greg Kurstin, who was a member of Beck’s band for his 2002 album Sea Change, before becoming a producer for Adele, Lily Allen and The Shins, per NME.

“Girl in a bikini with a Lamborghini Shih Tzu,” Beck rhymes on the track. Watch the lyric video for “Wow” below.

Beck’s new album follows 2014’s Morning Phase, and will also feature the 2015 single “Dreams.” The award-winning artist, whose recordings encompass funk, hip hop and folk music, has released 12 studio albums, with his breakthrough single “Loser” becoming a worldwide hit in 1994. Most recently, Beck honored Prince by covering his 1985 hit “Raspberry Beret” during Memphis’ Beale Street Music Festival, Stereogum reports.

The Grammy-winner is hosting a fans’ interpretations of “Wow” on his website, allowing them to “dress a model of Beck with outfits from his various albums over the years.” Beck and his production team have been working on his new album for few years, Billboard reports, quoting him as saying, “It exists. We’ve been working on this a few years so this body of songs has this energy I think will be very good for our live shows,” he told Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show, World Record. Beck dropped the trap-influenced “Wow” single on the U.K. station, and you can listen to that interview via the player below.

Beck and his wife have been involved in Scientology for most of their lives. During a 2005 interview with the Irish Sunday Tribune’s Magazine, the musician confirmed his loyalty to the controversial organization, saying, “Yeah, I’m a Scientologist. My father has been a Scientologist for about 35 years, so I grew up in and around it.” Below is an excerpt of his explanation of the religion’s core beliefs:

I think it’s about philosophy and sort of, uh, all these kinds of, you know, ideals that are common to a lot of religions…. There’s nothing fantastical… just a real deep grassroots concerted effort for humanitarian causes. I don’t know if you know the stuff they have. It’s unbelievable the stuff they are doing. Education… they have free centres all over the place for poor kids. They have the number one drug rehabilitation programme in the entire world (called Narconon). It has a 90-something % success rate… When you look at the actual facts and not what’s conjured in people’s minds that’s all bullshit to me because I’ve actually seen stuff first hand.

Back in 2009, Beck launched the Record Club, a musical project that encouraged artists, such as actor Giovanni Ribisi, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Chicago’s Tortoise, to cover an entire album by another artist in one day, without rehearing ahead of time. Albums they covered included: The Velvet Underground’s The Velvet Underground & Nico, Leonard Cohen’s Songs of Leonard Cohen, Skip Spence’s Oar, INXS’s Kick, and Yanni’s Yanni Live at the Acropolis. Video footage of every performance was made available on Beck’s website.

Beck will be on the festival circuit this summer, mostly in Europe – but has two U.S. appearances this weekend – Friday, June 3 at the Governor’s Ball in New York City and the Mountain Jam on June 4 in Hunter, N.Y. He’s also set to play a couple of UK festivals, including the Fold fest on June 25, and he’ll takeover the Pyramid Stage of Glatsonbury on June 26. The show is followed by headline dates in London at the O2 Brixton Academy on June 28, and the Manchester Albert Hall on June 29.
