The Vampire Diaries Season 8 will not have the typical villain. Instead of the TVD characters battling vampires, werewolves, witches or humans who are a threat, this big bad will be different. So far, not much information has been revealed about the mystery monster. However, a few details have been released. Discover everything that is known so far about the creature that was inside the Vault.
Warning: Spoilers for The Vampire Diaries Season 8 are ahead.
On the last episode of The Vampire Diaries, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) saved Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham). Unfortunately, he was not prepared to hear the voice of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev). Instead of backing away, Damon had to inch closer just in case it really was his girlfriend. That is when the monster in the Vault grabbed hold of the elder Salvatore brother.
Later, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) went to save Damon, but got himself infected by the cunning creature, too. So, what exactly is this new big bad?

In The Vampire Diaries episode titled “Gods & Monsters,” viewers did not actually see the Season 8 villain. The only thing that was visible were the monster’s creepy hands. They were pale, bony, and freakishly long. Other than that, all fans have is clues and what the cast and crew have said about the new big bad in TVD Season 8.
When Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries premieres, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), Caroline Forbes (Candice King), and Bonnie Bennett will realize Damon and Enzo are on a killing spree. On the West coast, the vampires will kidnap, torture, and kill more than 60 people. At the conclusion of the season finale of The Vampire Diaries, fans saw dozens of bodies hanging upside down in a warehouse. Damon had a creepy grin on his face and it was obvious he and Enzo had no plans of slowing down.
Stefan, Caroline, and Bonnie will try to find Damon and Enzo in The Vampire Diaries Season 8. However, Bonnie has not only lost the two men she cares about the most, but she doesn’t have her magic anymore, either. The group used to depend on locator spells, but without magic, that is impossible. They will either have to find Damon and Enzo the old-fashioned way or recruit another witch, but that would require an explanation and assurances the witch would not harm Damon and Enzo.
In order to save Damon and Enzo, the characters (and viewers) need to know a little bit about what they are up against. In an interview with TV Guide, TVD writer Brian Young confirmed the creature that was in the Vault will be the first CGI villain in the series.

It is also known that the monster is thousands of years old and has powerful abilities. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, it used Elena’s voice to trick Damon. This is something the monster has done before. Remember when Bonnie was in the mental hospital trying to get information about the Vault? The creature used the voice of loved ones to lure victims inside, so this is a trick the monster has perfected over the years.
What is interesting about this is that the monster seems to know which voice to use. It isn’t some random voice, but that of a loved one, someone a victim cannot resist. How could the monster in the Vault know that the only voice Damon would go toward was Elena’s? It seems the Season 8 villain might have some psychic abilities.
Not only did The Vampire Diaries Season 8 villain use vocal trickery, but was able to completely take over Damon and Enzo’s bodies and minds.
Are Damon and Enzo possessed? This is a question that remains unanswered and there are different theories. At the mental hospital, Bonnie was told that the creature is not a “who” or an “it,” but the monster is dangerous because of what it does to victims. It sucks everything good inside of a person so that only the worse traits are left. This seems to imply that it takes over a human body, like in possession.
However, even those who are possessed by demons still have moments where their “real selves” emerge. This doesn’t seem to be the case with Damon and Enzo.
A statement made in a cast interview is leading fans to a different theory for The Vampire Diaries Season 8. Speaking to IGN, Candice King believes Damon and Enzo are going to have to “wake up.” Right now, the writers are still working on the story, so this is just a theory and not a spoiler.
Wouldn’t it be interesting if Damon and Enzo were not completely gone, just laying dormant inside their own bodies? If this TVD Season 8 theory is accurate, then it is possible to save them. It was Elena’s voice that got Damon possessed and her voice could be used again to bring him out of it.
As for Enzo, Julie Plec used the love of “Delena” to explain Bonnie and Enzo‘s relationship. He is Bonnie’s “one true love.” If their love is truly that strong, Bonnie may be able to bring Enzo out of the creature’s clutches. However, the vampires have to be found first.

What else is known about The Vampire Diaries Season 8 monster? Brian Young was asked if there are any parts of Damon and Enzo left. The TVD writer wouldn’t give a definite answer. However, he seemed to imply that Stefan believes Damon is still in his body. Young also teased that they wanted “bad Damon” to come out, but in a way that his actions would be forgivable.
As for the mythology and name of the creature, that will not be revealed. For the first time, the cast and crew are keeping that under wraps.
“We are not calling it anything, we are waiting for Season 8,” Julie Plec told TV Line regarding The Vampire Diaries Season 8 villain. “I mean, internally, we’re calling it something, but we’re not telling people what that is yet. It’s funny, this is the first time we’ve done this little story trick where we’re actually withholding the identity and mythology of the new villain from the audience before the next season.”
Speaking to TV Guide, actor and director Paul Wesley said The Vampire Diaries Season 8 is going to be “really dark, really twisted, and really fun.” However, he would not divulge any TVD spoilers on the creature or what will happen to Damon and Enzo.
Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham both announced they are leaving The Vampire Diaries after Season 8. Some fans worry Damon’s storyline with the monster could leave the TVD character dead. However, Damon is a favorite among fans. The writers know this and hopefully will give Damon Salvatore a positive ending to his story.
