The leaked Deadpool footage that hit the Interwebz a couple of days ago has created a stir. Fans noted its completely unrelated turnaround from the horrible Deadpool showing in Wolverine: Origins. The footage, while only a minute and a half long, seemed to be a screening test of a computer-animated Deadpool film idea, likely meant as a spinoff from the Wolverine movie in which the superhero made his screen debut through Twentieth Century Fox.
The Deadpool footage is hard to find now, having been officially recognized by Fox as genuine while they simultaneously had it removed from various sharing sites under copyright law. It was “real and spectacular” notes Mashable.
To further lend credence to the idea that a Deadpool movie is in the works, Business Insider notes that the marketing and merchandising of Deadpool gear has been ramped up by Marvel. The leak itself could be part of that marketing, in fact, as the footage was apparently, BI notes, probably made last year.
Whatever is going on, it’s clear that Marvel and Fox need to make this film. Here are five reasons why Deadpool needs to hit the big screen on his own.
1 – Nothing Like the Flop in Wolverine
This Deadpool is clearly the one which made him popular as a comic book hero. Ryan Reynolds himself, who portrayed Deadpool in that Wolverine film, said that it was badly done. He’s quoted in Empire as stating that the character portrayed in Wolverine was “one rewrite away from Deadpool jumping across the desk at the studio executive..” With the further note that Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld was part of the leaked clip’s creation, we can see that all involved in the creative process seem to understand what Deadpool needs to be on-screen.
2 – Film Likely To Have PG-13 or R Rating
If the leaked footage is any indication, it’s clear that no punches would be pulled on language which, coupled with the inevitable violence associated with Deadpool, would mean an R rating in most markets. That would be both in keeping with the Deadpool character and on par with the making of a better Deadpool film. It would also be the first time that Marvel has released a comic-based film with an R rating. Even The Punisher didn’t have that. In either rendition. Although a PG-13 would not kill it, according to Deadpool creator Liefeld:
Yes RT @cougar78: @robertliefeld @JediKnightJosh Standards have relaxed so much a PG-13 rating could be fine for a Deadpool movie.

3 – Crazy Character, Crazy Action
We saw in the now-pulled test footage that Deadpool is being depicted as both a nutcase (singing along with Gwen Stefani?!) and butt kicking. Throwing in quick doodles to showcase his planned attack strategy was just icing on the cake. The action itself was very obviously katana-worthy and awesome.
4 – Ryan Reynolds Seems To Get It
If the Deadpool character in a film is indeed portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, he’s one actor who appears to “get” what Deadpool is all about. He has the ability to be smart-mouthed, probably naturally, and off-the-cuff-sounding quips. A Daily Superhero interview of Rob Liefeld, which further confirmed the footage, also admitted that the Deadpool footage was all about Reynolds. That proves the point.
5 – Script is Awesome
The script for both the test footage and the film was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick of Zombieland fame. Need we say more?
