Charli XCX: I Want to Fuck Up the Music Industry

Boom Clap star says she wants to be written about in 50 years time as someone who made pop music "cooler"...



Charli XCX may be riding high in this week's Official Chart Update, but the Boom Clap star has stated she doesn't care if her new music flops.



During an interview with The Daily Star, the singer claims she wants to "fuck up the music industry" with her tunes and while sales aren't important to her, she does want to be "written about in 50 years time".



The star - who recently worked with Iggy Azalea on hit tune Fancy - told the tabloid: "Having a hit would be cool but my goal isn't to be number one. I don't care if I sell one copy or millions.



"I just want to be written about in 50 years' time as someone who helped make pop cooler than it is now. I want to f**k up the music industry, not make it a prettier place."



She added: "I'm a fan of Britney Spears and the Spice Girls, so my heart lies in pop but I want to do it my way."







The track, which is taken from the movie The Fault In Our Stars, went in at Number 6 this week in the Official Singles Chart.



Elsewhere in the chart, Cheryl Cole has taken the Number 1 spot with her new single 'Crazy Stupid Love', making her only the third British woman to have claimed four solo Number 1s. Canadian group Magic! are at Number 2 with their track 'Rude', while Ariana Grande's 'Problem' (which features Charli XCX's former collaborator Iggy Azalea) is at Number 5.



Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran has achieved the longest consecutive Number 1 Album run since Adele's '21'. His new album 'X' is at the top of the Official Albums Chart for a fifth week in a row.



Dolly Parton's 'Blue Smoke - The Best Of' is at Number 2 with Sam Smith just behind with his debut album 'In The Lonely Hour'. George Ezra and Coldplay make up the rest of the Top 5 with 'Wanted On Voyage' and 'Ghost Stories' respectively.







Charli XCX's "Boom Clap" overtakes Ariana's "Break Free" to become pop's fastest-rising song.



Unwilling to slow down, Charli XCX’s breakthrough solo effort “Boom Clap” has officially become the fastest-rising song at pop radio.



According to Mediabase, the song’s spin count of 8,842 for the seven days ending July 25 represents a week-over-week gain of 1,942. No other song on the format is gaining airplay with more velocity.



The song, which was the 9th-most-played-song during the measured period, reached an audience of 51.82 million in that window.



While it, at least for today, cannot lay claim to the distinction of being pop’s greatest gainer, Ariana Grande’s “Break Free (featuring Zedd)” is still catapulting into pop radio dominance. The song’s 6,103 spins during the aforementioned seven day period represent a gain of 1,936 spins. It was pop radio’s second-fastest-rising song and its 13th-most-played song overall.



Other top five gainers include Sam Smith’s #4 “Stay With Me” (+1,871 to 14,657), Disclosure’s #5 “Latch (featuring Sam Smith)” (+1,399 to 13,655) and Iggy Azalea’s #18 “Black Widow (featuring Rita Ora)” (+1,357 to 4,299).



In addition to the aforementioned Sam Smith, Disclosure and Iggy Azalea songs, tracks enjoying impressive acceleration in their week-over-week spin gainers include Meghan Trainor’s #38 “All About That Bass,” Florida Georgia Line’s #28 “This is How We Roll (remix featuring Jason DeRulo),” Tove Lo’s #39 “Habits,” Pharrell’s #12 “Come Get it Bae” and Enrique Iglesias’ #19 “Bailando (featuring Descemer Bueno, Sean Paul and Gente de Zona).”







"Fancy" played a major role in introducing featured artist Charli XCX to the masses. She is now charting higher with her own "Boom Clap."



Update: Selling at very similar rates, Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap,” Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy (featuring Charli XCX)” and Nico and Vinz’ “Am I Wrong” are repeatedly shifting between the #6, #7 and #8 positions on iTunes. But as of press time, Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap” was indeed the fastest-seller of the three.

On the eve of what will likely be the song’s ascent into the Top 10 at pop radio, Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap” has charged past Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy (featuring Charli XCX)” on iTunes.



As of press time, “Boom Clap” was #6 on the iTunes overall single sales chart. Former #1 “Fancy,” which carved Charli XCX a firm position on the pop culture radar, is #7.



With “Fancy” on the unmistakable decline, both contributors have shifted focus to their new singles. Charli XCX is making major waves with the aforementioned “Boom Clap,” while lead artist Iggy Azalea seeks to reach the top of the chart with follow-up “Black Widow.” That song, which features Rita Ora, is currently #27 on iTunes.



Prior doing so with “Fancy,” Charli XCX reached the top ten on iTunes as a featured artist on Icona Pop’s “I Love It.” In addition to “Fancy,” Iggy Azalea is represented in the top ten as a featured artist on Ariana Grande’s #4 “Problem.”







Last month, Charli XCX revealed in an interview with Popjustice that she originally offered her hit single "Boom Clap" to Hilary Duff but her team apparently turned it down because it was "not cool enough" for her.



When addressing the subject with the magazine, the "So Yesterday" singer said she had no idea she was even offered the track in the first place and that it's her current favorite song.



“I didn’t know that I had an option to have it,” Hilary says. “It’s my favorite song on the radio right now.”



“I remember there was talk about my label trying to get us to write together and it was in New York and I was flying home so I didn’t have time to have a session with her. I am literally obsessed with that song and I didn’t know that it was an option for me.”



Hilary Duff will release her new single "Chasing The Sun" on July 29th via Island Records.
